Peshawar (English Peshawar) is the capital of the Pakistani province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The city with about 2 million inhabitants is located at the eastern foot of the Khyber Pass and is one of the cultural centers of the Pashtuns.

- Peshawar Cantonment is the terminus of the main rail link that crosses Pakistan. There are daily night train connections, among others. with Rawalpindi (near Islamabad, approx. 6 hours), Lahore (approx. 13 hours) and Karachi (approx. 27 hours).
- The railway line to the Khyber Pass (Landi Kotal / Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan) has not had any passenger traffic for several years.
