Buda and Pest connected via the Chain Bridge

Pest is a historic city ofHungary which in 1873 merged with Buda ed Óbuda to give life to the city of Budapest, of which today it constitutes the whole part east of the Danube. Pest is the most commercial and industrial area of Budapest. The homonymous province of which it is the capital takes its name from it.

The name Pest derives from a Slavic word meaning "furnace", "oven", probably with reference to a local cave, where the fire was burning.

Geographical notes

Its territory includes about two thirds of the city.

Background

Pest was a separate and independent city, with references already appearing in writings dating back to 1148. In previous centuries there were ancient Celtic and Roman settlements. Pest became an important economic center during the 11th-13th centuries. It was destroyed in 1241 by the invasion Mongolian ofHungary but rebuilt shortly after. In 1838 it was flooded by the Danube. In 1849 the first suspension bridge, the Chain Bridge, was built over the Danube connecting Pest with Buda. Consequently, in 1873, the two cities were unified with Óbuda to become Budapest.

One of the architectural themes that recur in this district are the small courtyards and alleys interconnected between the various buildings.

Simple icon time.svgOpen 24 hours a day. This fortress is a copy, actually not perfect, of a castle of the Transylvania, built in 1896 for the celebrations of the thousand years of Hungary. The structure is divided into three distinct wings: one Gothic, one Romanesque and one Baroque, creating a strange effect to say the least when viewed from a distance. However, as you get closer to the structure, it will reveal all its magic to you; thanks to the moat and the vegetation, in fact, you will only be able to see one wing at a time, which will take you on a journey through time through the various styles. The beauty is that this marvel was intended to be temporary but the people of Budapest admired the castle so much that they rebuilt it permanently. Today it can be admired on the island in the middle of a park.

Dohány Street Synagogue in Elizabethtown
  • 8 Great Synagogue and Jewish Museum (Dohány utcai zsinagóga és a Zsidó Múzeum), VII. Dohány ut. 2-8 (Metro line 1 yellow: Astoria), 36 1 343-0420, @. Ecb copyright.svgAdults: € 8, students: € 4, Budapest card: € 7, for students: € 3.5. Simple icon time.svgFrom March to October: Sun-Thu 10: 00-18: 00, Fri: 10: 00-16: 30; Winter: early closure of an hour and a half. This synagogue is unique in the world both for its size and for its onion domes, strange in the architecture of the synagogues. Some domes are even 43 meters high. The reason for the presence of the onion domes, typical of Hungarian Catholic buildings, lies in the fact that the architect in charge of building the synagogue, Ludwig Forster was in fact a Catholic. With his work he managed to mix a little Catholicism even in the construction of a Jewish temple.
  • 9 Kazinczy Street Synagogue (Sasz-Chevra ortodox nagyzsinagóga, Kazinczy utcai zsinagóga), VII. Kazinczy u. 29-31 (Metro line 2 red: 'Astoria' or Metro line 1 yellow: Opera). The city's congregation of Orthodox Jews decided to build its own synagogue, detached from other Jewish currents, in 1909. The result was this example of a late art noveau synagogue, completed in 1912-1913 by the Löffler brothers who also cared for the interior decor. This particular building includes a Jewish school and a common meeting room, both dating from 1911. The facade is the emblem of post-secessionist Hungarian art. On the east wall is the Ark of the Covenant. There are also two marble columns, one of the rabbi and the other is the one with the star of David used for reading the Torah. The Ark of the Covenant was made by Valkai István. The lights on the central chandelier and the lamps trace the shape of the menorah.
  • 10 Rumbach Street Synagogue (Rumbach utcai zsinagóga), VII. Rumbach Sebestyén utca 11-13 (Metro line 1 yellow,Metro line 2 red,Metro line 3 blue: 'Deák Ferenc tér'). Following the Great Synagogue, this one too has an architectural motif in yellow-orange. In front there is a "House of Adoration" for those Jews who are not allowed to enter the heart of the temple. The synagogue was built in 1872 to a design by the Viennese architect Otto Wagner, who here in Hungary only built this synagogue. The building follows the romantic style with strong oriental influences. The two towers are reminiscent of Muslim minarets while the interior is octagonal, spacious and high with slender iron columns. The capitals of the columns are decorated in a style reminiscent of the grandiose Alhambra complex in Granada. The predominant colors are gold, blue and red of the reliefs on the walls.

Elisabetta is in fact the largest parish in the entire VII district. On an artistic level, the church recovers the French Gothic by mixing it with modern solutions in the construction field. The church has three naves, one of which, the northern one, houses the main entrance. On the main door there is the statue of St. Elizabeth and a Gothic rose window. The facade is externally decorated with the statues of S. Ladislao, Santo Stefano and S. Maria.
  • 12 Reformed Church of Fasori (Phasors református templom), VII. Városligeti fasor 7., 36 1 3427 311, 36 1 32 24 499, @. Designed by the architect Árkay Aladár, the structure follows the English styles mixed with the Finnish ones. The facade is covered with ceramic slabs decorated with motifs of Hungarian folk art. Not to be confused with the Hungarian National Gallery ( Nemzeti Galeria), which instead is located in the Buda Castle. Founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchenyi, whose possessions (manuscripts, maps, coins and collections) formed the core of the museum repertoire, the Gallery was designed and built by the architect Mihály Pollack between 1837 and 1847. When it was inaugurated , was the fourth largest museum in Europe. However, it was far enough from the city proper that it was often overrun by passing cattle or escaping sale at the weekly market in Kalvin Square. Before entering, pause to look at the artwork that is the outside of the museum itself, a fine example of neoclassical architecture, with a wonderful porch. Eight Corinthian columns support a frieze with an ornamental frame and a large pediment. The pediment presents the allegorical figure of Pannonia (Pannonia was the Roman name for the province of Hungary) sitting flanked by the Hungarian coat of arms and surrounded on the sides by Science and Art. The exterior of the museum is also significant for what has historically happened here. According to a popular urban legend during the revolutions of 1848 that swept through central Europe, and precisely on March 15, Sándor Petőfi (perhaps the most famous patriotic poet in Hungary) recited his poem full of nationalistic sentiments, the National Anthem, to a large crowd from the left column of the external staircase of the National Museum. The poem urged the popular masses to rise up to free Hungary from Habsburg oppression. Not everyone was impressed. The museum director noted in his diary that a noisy crowd gathered outside the building that day, disturbing his work so much that he had to leave the museum to continue working in peace at his home! Today the main attractions of the museum are the collections donated by the Kubinyi, Pyrker, Marczibányi and Jankovich families. In the late 19th century, some collections were separated from the original collection to be housed today in other more recent specialized museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, that of Applied Arts, that of Natural Sciences and that of Ethnography. The national museum is therefore today divided into five main sections (archeology, medieval times, modern times, numismatics, historical paintings), two permanent exhibitions, and the archaeological library (with over 100,000 volumes!) Which overall make it one of the richest museums Central Europe.

Night clubs

In Pest there are dozens of romkocsma (literally: ruins pub). They are premises built in old abandoned or dilapidated houses that very often do not look anything like a local and therefore are very difficult to identify. The only solution is to ask the locals for advice and live this interesting experience of fun with a post-socialist flavor.

Bar & Club

  • 28 For Sale Pub, Vámház körút 2 (BKV busz symbol.svg: 5, Tram: 83, Tram: 2, 47, 49 to Fővám tér). A rustic style pub located at the Szabadság bridge. Although small, it has two floors. They serve good food and many types of beers as well as brighten the atmosphere with live music. Shelled peanuts are served free with beer and you can have fun tossing them around, which is perfectly legal and allowed; This pub has been open for over 10 years and the walls are covered with business cards, receipts and mementos from its visitors. Be sure to attach yours while you are there! Only sore point: the staff are a bit rude.

Also, as with most Hungarian bars, it has a couple of foosball (CSO-CSO) tables that are almost always busy.

Macska which means "cat" in Hungarian is a charming, eclectic pub as well as a vegetarian restaurant in the 8th district. The neighborhood may have a bit of a bad reputation, but it's safe enough if you're close to Jozsef Ringroad. This is a ruined pub decorated with recycled, retro pieces, proving once again that in Hungary one man's trash is another man's treasure. Art exhibitions, musical evenings with DJ sets and craft beer are also organized here, as well as delicious vegetarian snacks, meals and desserts. Wifi, friendly staff and interesting people.
