How to get

The red metro line 2 (BKV m 2 jms.svg) crosses the Danube from Pest in the north of Belváros. It stops at three main transport hubs: Batthyány Square (Admire the view to the Parliament before switching to the HÉV suburban train of Szentendre), Szell Kalman Square (formerly Moszkva Square, gateway to the Castle Hill) and the southern railway station (Déli pályaudvar).

The green metro line 4 (BKV m 4 jms.svg) crosses the Danube, at a point south of the city center.

You can take trams 4, 6, 47, 49 from Pest. All these lines (with the exception of number 4) cross the southern square of Moricz Zsigmond Korter, south of Gellérthegy. The 4 and 6 operated modern trams are in contrast to some of the other cars currently in use. The 47 and 49 go from Deak Square (the central hub for the Budapest metro lines), towards Liberty Bridge (Szabadság Híd) in the south of Buda.

Clark Adam Square (Clark Ádám tér) is at the western end of the Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd), which is considered the most beautiful of the bridges over the Danube. The square is also home to the zero statue which indicates the start (or end) of journeys from the capital, as indicated on the signs on the main roads.

Buda has two railway stations: the southern railway station (Déli pályaudvar), already mentioned, is the terminus of the red metro line 2 (BKV m 2 jms.svg). There Kelenföldi railway station, located on the outskirts, is becoming more and more important, in fact many trains departing from Keleti pályaudvar stop here.

Batthyany Square (Batthyány tér), a combined transport hub where there is station M2 (BKV m 2 jms.svg), the terminus of the BKV hev symbol.svg5 (the only underground in all Budapest), heading north towards Óbuda, towards the suburbs, and for Szentendre where the beautiful bend of the Danube is located at the southern end. A couple of city buses and two tram lines also end their journey here.

  • Rack tram (Fogaskerekű). Using it in the Buda hills is a great excursion out of the city center. The cogwheel tram, which is officially tram 61, leaves from Városmajor. It climbs through the wooded hills of Buda to get to the top. Since 1868 a horse-drawn tram line ran the route from Lánchíd to Zugliget at set times and was operated by the public railway company of Buda (Budai Közúti Vaspálya Társaság). Nikolaus Riggenbach (the designer of the first European rack railway line of Vitznau-Rig opened in 1871) with a colleague applied for the construction of the rack railway line leading to Svábhegy. The first run took place at 4pm on June 24, 1874, and regular traffic began the following day. Since July 2, 1929, the new electrically powered vehicles run every 15 minutes. 1973 saw a complete rebuild, during which the entire track was revamped and new vehicles introduced.

The old maps show signs for the Pioneer Railway (Úttörővasút) which is the old name for the Soviet-era children's railway. Today it corresponds to line 7. In 1947, the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) decided to build a railway that would be run by children. The first section, from Széchényi Hill to Előre station (now Virágvölgy) was inaugurated on 31 July 1948. The second section to Ságvári-liget (now Szépjuhászné), was completed the following year, while the last section, for Hűvösvölgy, opened in late August 1950.
