Located on the banks of the São Francisco River, Petrolina and borders the city of Juazeiro, at Bahia, with which it is connected by the Presidente Dutra Bridge. Together, the cities have a population of 500 thousand inhabitants and constitute the main economic, leisure, medical and educational center in the São Francisco Valley. It is also considered the fastest growing city in the interior of Pernambuco. Rich in irrigated agriculture, the region is the second largest wine producer in the country, behind only the wineries in the South region.
