Petrozavodsk (Петрозаводск) is a city of the Russia, capital of the Republic of Karelia.
To know
Geographical notes
The town stands on the west bank of the Onega lake and from it the hydrofoils leave for theKiži Island, classified as one of the World Heritage Sites in Russia.
Background
The first trace of the city is found in the geographical map of Abraham Ortelius in which there is an inhabited center named Onegaborg approximately in the area corresponding to the current city; the official history of the city however begins in the thirteenth century.
The Russian name Petrozavodsk literally means "Peter's factory"and refers to the fact that the first Russian settlement, founded on the orders of Peter the Great in 1703, was born for needs related to the foundation of St.Pietroburgo to manufacture cannons and anchors for the Baltic fleet at the time of the Great Northern War (1700–1721). At first the foundry used the name Shuysky zavod (literally, "factory on the Shuya River"), but a decade later it became Petrovsky zavod ("Petrine factory"), named after the reigning monarch.
By 1717, Petrovskaya Sloboda had become the largest settlement in Karelia, with about 3,500 inhabitants, a wooden fort, a covered market and miniature palaces of the Tsar and Menshikov. The city's best-known landmark became the wooden church of Saints Peter and Paul, rebuilt in 1772 and renovated in 1789. The church retained its original iconostasis until it was destroyed by fire on October 30, 1924.
After Peter's death, Petrovskaya Sloboda depopulated, although not completely, and the factory declined. It closed in 1734, but revived in 1773 when Catherine the Great founded a new iron foundry upstream of the Lososinka River for military purposes. Designed to provide guns for wars Russian-Turkish in progress, the foundry was named Alexandrovsky, named after Alexander Nevsky, who was considered a patron saint of the region. During Catherine's municipal reform of 1777, Petrovskaya Sloboda was incorporated as a city, after which its name was changed to Petrozavodsk. A new neoclassical city center was then built, centered on the new Piazza Rotonda. In 1784 Petrozavodsk was large enough to become the administrative center of the Karelia. The factory was modernized and expanded under the supervision of Charles Gascoigne in 1787-96.
