Pozzuoli is a city of Campania.

To know

An ancient and fascinating city, its birth dates back to around 529 BC by political exiles from Samo who, with the consent of nearby Cuma, founded the city of Dicearchia or the "Just Government". In Roman times it was a thriving and rich port, a crossroads of merchant traffic in the Mediterranean, mainly from the East to Rome. The importance that the city assumed in this period is testified by several public and private buildings built by the Romans. Many of these are well preserved and can be visited. Among other things, we remember the Temple of Serapis (the Macellum), the Flavian Amphitheater, the Rione Terra etc. While in the vicinity, throughout the Phlegraean area, there are several buildings that the Roman aristocracy, including the emperors, had built to dedicate themselves to the sea and otium, building luxurious holiday villas and numerous spas.

Geographical notes

Pozzuoli is located in the gulf of the same name in a unique landscape scenario, that of the Phlegraean Fields, between the sea, volcanic lakes, forests (nearby there is the Cuma forest) and parks (a short distance away there is the natural reserve of the Parco degli Astroni). The Phlegraean Fields are a volcanic area, and the Solfatara, one of the 40 volcanoes present, is still active, in fact the characteristic phenomena of sulfur dioxide fumaroles, jets of boiling mud and high soil temperatures are visible. In the area occurs the phenomenon of bradyseism, the raising and lowering of the earth's crust due to the pressure of the underlying gases. This has led to the re-emergence from the sea of previously submerged areas, often with relevant evidence of the past.

When to go

The mild climate and the presence of the sea make it possible to visit at any time of the year. Probably the beginning of spring, with the lengthening of the days and away from the chaotic period of summer, could be the advisable period. A first bath would already be possible in late May.
