![]() | ATTENTION:Puntland is dangerous for independent travelers. Although much safer than the southern or central regions of Somalia, the Puntland region is the territory of several warlords and the possibility of being killed, kidnapped or harmed in some way is high. Violent crime, petty theft and lack of basic services are significant dangers that add to the preceding ones. The territorial claims of Puntland and Somaliland overlap and the border region between them is a conflict zone and must absolutely be avoided. Overland travel from Somaliland is also impossible or otherwise incredibly dangerous. Persons traveling to Puntland with humanitarian or similar organizations should consult the organization's or employer's planned safety measures. (July 2012) |
Puntland (Puntlaand, in Arabicأرض البنط) is a northern region of the Somalia declared itself autonomous at the end of the 90s.
To know
Puntland is a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garoe in the region of Nugaal. One third of Somalia's population lives in the territory, which contains about one third of the country's geographical area. The name "Puntland" derives from the Land of Punt mentioned by ancient Egyptian sources. The exact location of the legendary territory is still a mystery. Many studies suggest that the Land of Punt was located in present-day Somalia, while others propose that it was located elsewhere.
Puntland is relatively quiet compared to other regions of Somalia, with its own government and public services, however, it is best to hire a local police unit for the period of stay.
Geographical notes
Puntland borders the region of Somaliland to the west, the Gulf of Aden in the north, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, the central region Galmudug in the south, and theEthiopia in the southwest.
Background
Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998.
Unlike the neighbor Somaliland, Puntland, as with all other regions of the country, does not seek outright independence from Somalia.
