Rio Grande is the largest city in the province Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south Argentina. It is located on the Atlantic coast in the north of the Isla Grande, the main island of the fire land-Archipelago.

The rapidly growing city is architecturally modern, shaped by industry and its port and is most interesting for anglers from a tourist point of view, as numerous rivers rich in fish can be reached from here.

background

The area around the city has been from the Middle Ages Selk'nam-Indians settled. In 1880 a Salesian mission was founded north of the present city. Gold prospectors set up shop in the region three years later. But it was not until 1921 that the city was officially founded by decree of the then President Hipólito Yrigoyen. In 1972 the settlement of industry was encouraged by a federal law, which led to a rapid boom in the city, especially in the electronics and media sectors. In the 1990s, however, things went downhill again due to increasing foreign competition as a result of liberalization. A hesitant revival can be felt today.

The city's surroundings are flat to hilly, and the climate is cool, albeit warmer and significantly drier than in Ushuaia. But it's still not enough for bathing - the water is rarely over 10 ° C, even in midsummer. The biggest attractions are in the area - albeit a walk in the Barrio Viejo (Old Town district), characterized by painted wooden houses, can be attractive. Nevertheless, unlike Ushuaia, for example, Río Grande looks like a normal Argentine medium-sized town.
