Rio is the capital of State of Rio de Janeiro, being the Brazilian city that receives the most international tourists. Its inhabitants are called cariocas.

It is known worldwide for its beaches, for Garota of Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema), its geography and monuments, such as Cristo Redentor and Pan de Azúcar.

History

Rio was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese as a fortification against French corsairs who trafficked in wood and products from Brazil. Piracy played an important role in the history of the city, and there are still colonial fortresses to visit (see below). The Portuguese fought the French for almost 10 years, with both sides having native tribes as allies. For the next two centuries it was a minor outpost of the Portuguese Empire, until in 1720 gold, diamonds and ore were found in Minas Gerais. Later, as the closest port, Rio became the port for these minerals and replaced Salvador as the main city of the colony in 1763. When Napoleon invaded Portugal, the Royal Family moved to Brazil and made Rio the capital. of the Kingdom (making it the only city outside of Europe that was the capital of a European country). When Brazil became independent in 1822, it adopted the Monarchy as its form of government (with the emperors Pedro I and Pedro II). Many historians and Brazilians from elsewhere say that Cariocas are nostalgic for the royal and imperial times, which is reflected in many place and shop names. In 2009, the city won its bid to host the XXXI Games of the Olympics in the summer of 2016.

To get

Rio is one of the main transportation hubs in the country, second only to São Paulo.

By plane

The city has 3 airports:

  • 1  Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) ((IATA: GIG) Galeão International Airport, IATA: GIG) Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) in Wikipedia encyclopediaTom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsTom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) (Q733998) in the Wikidata database - (21) 3398-5050 - 20 km from the city center, receives national and international flights. It has taxi and bus services, known as freshness, which connect the area with the main tourist areas of the city. In this way, for those arriving at the international airport, the official taxi service is recommended, which can be found inside the airport. So that he carries little luggage, he can take the freshness, micro with air conditioning, a cheaper, more comfortable and safer option than the use of taxis (about R $ 50 to Catete). The normal Royal Bus can reach the Center and the beach area for 8 R $; the Real Micrónibus (2.3 R $), leaves you at the Santos Dummont airport, much more central, and there you can take a taxi to any point in the city.
  • 2  Santos Dumont Airport ((IATA: SDU), IATA: SDU) Santos Dumont Airport in Wikipedia encyclopediaSantos Dumont Airport in the Wikimedia Commons media directorySantos Dumont Airport (Q865475) in the Wikidata database - Much more central, you get off in the city center, but it is basically restricted to domestic flights, especially those that run every 15 minutes between Saint Paul and Rio, known as the get aerial.
  • Jacarepaguá Airport - For private flights and helicopters. It is quite far from the city center.

Boat

To get to Rio by boat, the only option is the ocean liners that depart from Buenos Aires, Punta del Este and other cities in Brazil.

By train

The train in Rio makes the transport between the Big river, which contains cities like Duke of Caxias Y Nilopolis.

The station Central do Brasil It is located in the center of the city of Rio. From that point you can take the subway or the bus to other places.

By bus

Rodoviária Novo Rio - It is the bus terminal in Rio de Janeiro. A large number of visitors come to Rio from other Brazilian cities by buses. There are regular lines to all capitals, such as Assumption, Buenos Aires, Y Santiago. There is not much comfort. The services are precarious and irregular due to the small capacity available to the large number of travelers who circulate there. On busy days, such as holidays, chaotic situations occur, with a large number of passengers waiting for busloads with no places to sit. It should also be taken into account that the taxis that stop on the outside of the rodoviária are in a very precarious state. Bad professionals seek to take advantage of passengers loaded with their suitcases, trying to charge them fixed rates, generally much more expensive than the real value. There is also the service of freshness, the best option for those who arrive with little luggage and want to make a safe and comfortable journey. In that sense, the price of the ticket in the freshness it costs twice what you pay in a common bus.

By car

It is useful to arrive by car but you have to bear in mind that it is not easy to park in Rio. Especially in Copacabana, where many buildings do not have a garage. Generally you have to pay tips to flanelinhas to take care of the car.

Travel

With a minimal sense of location, it is easy to get around the neighborhoods in the southern part of Rio. The reason is simple: with the beach on one side and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon on the other, it's hard to get lost.

Boat

You can go out by boat to go to other cities, such as Niteroi and Island of Paquetá (Island of Paquetá).

Starting from Praça XV, in the northern part of the center, there are 3 types of maritime transport:

  • Boat
  • Airboat
  • Catamara

The Aerobarco and Catamarã are transport 70% faster than the boat.

By train

Metro Rio[1] - Concessionaire of the subway. It has 2 lines:

  • Line 1: South Zone to North Zone (Siqueira Campos to Saens Pena)
  • Line 2: North Zone to Baixada (Estácio to Pavuna)

Supervia[2] - Train concessionaire, which makes the connection between the city center (Central do Brasil) to the North and West Zones and other cities of the Big river.

There are transport integrations between the Metrô Rio and Supervia.

By bus

It is the most popular means of transport in the city. They ride at high speed, which may scare some tourists, but there is no reason to panic - it is absolutely natural.

Buses are an inexpensive transportation option (priced around $ 0.90 per dollar), but some are uncomfortable and unsafe. It is recommended to use the subway or fresh (buses with air conditioning, a little more expensive but safer and more comfortable).

By car

You can rent a car, come in your own or take a taxi.

The problem with renting a car or coming in your own is that it is not an easy task to be able to park in the city. You have to pay tips to flanelinhasThey are men who take care of areas where cars are parked (you have to pay them or yes or yes, because they take care of the street as if they were their property).

Renting a car is a good alternative for you to want to go to the most remote beaches, such as Barra or Grumari. If not, it is better to use the taxi or radio-taxi service, which circulate throughout the city. Radio taxis are a bit more expensive but more comfortable for the passenger. They are ideal to be picked up at the exit of a show or restaurant.

Carnival

Still, the biggest reason to visit Rio seems to be Carnival. This highly publicized festival lasts almost two weeks and is well known for the samba schools that parade through the Center, in a gigantic structure called the Sambadrome. During Carnival, Rio has much more to offer, however, with the blocos de rua, which parade through the streets. Now there are hundreds of these "samba blocks", which parade in almost every neighborhood, especially in the Center and the South Zone, gathering thousands of people. Some are very famous, and there are few Cariocas who have not heard of "Carmelitas", "Suvaco de Cristo", "Escravos da Mauá" or "Simpatia É Quase Amor".

In the tourist area, there are cyber and phone booths to facilitate communication.

Security

Rio is a bit unsafe city. Do not plan to enter any favela, unless you have relatives or go with a documented guide. Ignore any street vendor or any self-respecting strange person to guide you through this beautiful city.
