- Mr Guitar – located on Saya San Road, this bar is worth a visit. The pub-style decoration is often modified by the owner who is also a painter and whose works you can admire in the gallery next door. They have a wide selection of beers and cocktails and a live band every night, whose repertoire unfortunately remains a little too soft to set the mood (lots of Madonna, the Eagles, etc.). In any case, it remains one of the best bars in Yangon where young Burmese and expatriates meet.
- 50th Street – Located on 50th Street (downtown) as the name suggests. Also known as the "American club". The only place in Yangon where you can eat a real burger. The very nice pub-style decoration with its central staircase is a work by Innerspace (decoration store on Pyay Road). The atmosphere is quite nice with a choice of quite large and heterogeneous background music. The bar also has a pool table and dart board. The only problem is that the prices are quite high, which explains why the establishment is rarely full. It is therefore better to go there with a group of friends to set the mood.
- Savoy Hotel Inya Road – Jazz night on Wednesday evening with excellent rhythm 'n blues bands. The atmosphere is nice. We find ourselves as tight as in a NYC bar with expats' from all over the world. Great atmosphere and great place to meet people. The best is then to cross the street to eat grills and drink fresh fruit juices on the terrace of the Top Choice or the Friendship. You can also go for an Italian dinner at the excellent restaurant opposite which has a good selection of pastries.
- The Pitre Cat – it is the Alliance Française canteen located on Pyay Road. Run by a very nice expat, Natacha, it is the ideal place to come and meet young French-speaking Burmese people and chat with them. The best way to get to know the country and the culture better outside the tourist trails. Enjoy the excellent daily specials, fresh fruit juices. You can even eat pancakes there. Be careful though: the bar closes at 19 h, except exceptional evening. The best is to sit on the terrace with a good book from the AF library while sipping your hazelnut or papaya juice.
Go clubs: Unfortunately, most of the clubs in Yangon are located in hotels where most of the customers don't come to dance but to pick up girls to exploit them illegally. There is however a local club, very nice and where you will not be bothered: the Pioneer, which is located in place of the Grand Plaza Hotel, near the Downtown. It is the club for young Burmese who want to have fun. Great very techno atmosphere in a slightly kitsch decor, with quite good DJs who come from Singapore or Bangkok. It is behind the scenes of a very traditional and closed country. Entrance is approx 10 dollars with a drink. Be careful, however, the box closes at 1 h in the morning (dictatorship obliges). It is best to go there towards 10 h 30 - 11 h to make the most of the atmosphere.
Attend a concert: For rock lovers, there is a local band that is definitely worth a visit = Iron Cross. It is the only group of international level in the country. The group usually gives one concert per month either at the Myat Yin Yaw hotel (across from Saya San Road and the Pearl Condominium) or in the ballroom of the Strand Hotel (downtown). Ask any young person in Yangon, they should be able to tell you when the next concert will be. Unless you come across a poster. Not to be missed especially.
