Speak
In the Rhône, French is of course spoken, but beware of the so particular Lyonnais language with its reputedly dragging and singing accent and its particular vocabulary: the sound "eu" would be added at each end of a word and pronounced moreover in a more closed than in the rest of France. The untimely use of "y" to replace the "the" direct inanimate object complement is also characteristic, example: "do it" instead of "do it" but "will see it" does not change. Lyonnais words: "gone": child, "fenotte": woman, "string": funicular, "vogue": funfair, "dodger": sun, "alley": building entrance, "waste": place, " stopper ": restaurant, ...
Buy
The Rhône is a wine-growing department. Wine is therefore at the forefront of local specialties to buy. The department has 3 wine sectors:
- the Beaujolais North. Known for Beaujolais Nouveau, its wines are less so: Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent, Régnié and Saint Amour.
- the Cotes du Rhone, of which two vintages are found in the department: the Côte Rôtie and the Condrieu.
- the Coteaux du Lyonnais, vineyards of western Lyon.
Lyonnaise specialties, so numerous: cushions, papillotes, quenelles de Lyon (Voisin chocolates); rosette, jesus or sausage from Lyon, cervelas, sapper's apron, Beaujolais branches, canut's brain, bugnes, ...
Eat
In this department, gastronomy is king: Lyon has the title of World capital of gastronomy. Many "plugs" (typical Lyonnais restaurants) are certified authentic. Paul Bocuse is undoubtedly the most famous chef, his restaurant is located in Champagne-au-Mont-d'Or. Also see the Halles de Lyon- Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
