Isère is a department in the French region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The département, ordinal number 38. Isère borders the départements Rhône, Ain in the North, Savoie in the East, Hautes-Alpes and Drôme in the south, Ardeche and Loire in the West.

The Isère includes part of the French Alps. The highest point in the department is the summit of La Meije at 3,987 meters. The Vercors plateau lies between Grenoble and Valence. The western part is already in Rhône Valley.

- 1 La Meije is a 3983 meter high mountain. After Mont Blanc, it is probably the most famous mountain in France. It towers over the nearby village of La Grave, a mountaineering center and ski area known for its off-piste skiing and extreme sports. It is the second highest mountain of the Écrins after the Barre des Écrins.

Tourist Attractions
- The 2 Grande Chartreuse.is the mother abbey of the Carthusian Order. It is located near Voiron 25 kilometers north of Grenoble and can be visited. The abbey monks distill an alcoholic drink called "Chartreuse", which is made from more than a hundred plants picked from the mountain.

- The Coupe Icare.is an annual free-flying festival, such as paragliding and hang-gliding, which takes place in early autumn on the world-famous paragliding site in Lumbin.

- The Chartreuse liqueur has been made by Carthusian monks since the 18th century. It is a herbal liqueur made from 130 different herbs and spices. The plant elixir is available in green and yellow.
