To know
The city of Riccione, located on the Romagna Riviera, is known for the quality of its seaside tourism. The bathing establishments, extended along the entire coast, offer, in addition to access to the sea, services for all tastes and for all age groups: young people, families and the elderly. Seaside tourism is then flanked by many other activities for fun, physical well-being and culture.
Background
The first settlements in the Riccione area date back to the 2nd century BC, in the Roman-Republican age, when a small village was formed along the Via Flaminia (today the remains are visible in the San Lorenzo area). The settlement lost its traces in the late imperial period and throughout the early Middle Ages.
In 1260 the Florentine family of Agolanti settled in Riccione, linked to the lords of Rimini Malatesta and of which the remains of the castle on the hills of the city still remain. Subsequently, the Riccione area will not be affected by particular events.
The beginnings of tourist life in Riccione date back to the end of the nineteenth century when elegant residences began to be built for rich bourgeois, coming mainly from the Romagna and Bolognese hinterland.
A decisive imprint on the city is due to the spouses Ceccarini and in particular to his wife, Maria Borman, who is involved in many important social initiatives (including the construction of the hospital) for Riccione, which still appeared to be only a fraction of the municipality of Rimini.
In 1916 an earthquake devastated Riccione, but the recovery arrived immediately after the First World War, accelerated also by the liberation from the municipality of Rimini: in 1922, in fact, Riccione became an independent municipality.
In the Thirties the locality was increasingly popular as a holiday resort, resulting in a considerable urban extension and the growing development of structures and activities related to seaside tourism.
But the Second World War brought damage and casualties to Riccione, especially because the city was located on the Gothic Line.
A new recovery occurs with the boom economic after World War II, a recovery that will bring Riccione back among the favorite seaside destinations of Italians and tourists from beyond the Alps.
How to orient yourself

Most of the tourist attractions, linked to the presence of the sea, are located east of the railway line.
Continuing from north to south along the Riviera we meet: Riccione Marano, home to several summer nightclubs; Riccione Alba, crossed by Viale Dante; the central Lungomare, where Piazzale Roma is located, onto which Viale Ceccarini opens up; the Abissinia area with viale Gramsci and viale San Martino; Riccione terme, where the Riccione spa is located; and finally the Fontanelle area.
The discos are instead in the Colle dei Pini area, west of the railway line. Colle dei Pini is the small hill of Riccione on which the Agolanti Castle also stands. On the slopes of the hill also Aquafan and the Oltremare theme park.
How to get
By plane
The nearest airport is that of Rimini, which is located right on the border with Riccione. It carries out flights to and from Italy and also several flights to and from the main foreign airports. During the winter the airport may have fewer connections.
By car
From the A14 Bologna-Taranto motorway, take the Riccione exit.

The canal port of Riccione is often covered in sand and has draft problems. Contact the competent authorities for the landing. You can lean on the two transit platforms to let people get off, the one closest to the center is the one where the red lighthouse is. Riccione has a single railway station.

How to get around
For activities related to the beach, the ideal is the bicycle: Riccione boasts cycle paths that reach almost every corner of the city, but if you prefer the bus you can take the 11 that follows the entire seafront of Riccione and also of Rimini.
You can also move around Riccione with the Metromare which has numerous intermediate stops between the Riccione railway station and the Marano area.
Between the railway stations of Riccione and Rimini there is a trolleybus called Metromare which runs along a preferential route alongside the railway station, with 15 intermediate stops. The service allows you to reach Rimini faster than by bus, as it is not subject to city traffic.
To reach the Aquafan and Oltremare parks, the ideal is the bus nº58. The discos, on the other hand, are highly recommended to reach them by car or taxi, or with the special shuttles that organize the same discos (departure from Riccione station).
What see
- The Riviera. The beautiful beaches of Riccione are what most of all make the city famous. The establishments occupy almost the entire coast and offer the most diverse services for every age group and for every need: from the basic deckchair and umbrella to volleyball and soccer fields, gyms, whirlpools, bowling alleys, entertainment for children , excursions in moscone ... and so on and so forth. For those looking for greater tranquility and perhaps also want to reduce costs, numerous free beaches intersperse the establishments, often also equipped with showers. In the hottest hours of the day, however, it is not advisable to stay on the beach. Several bars and restaurants therefore offer shaded spaces for dining and relaxing.
- The walks. After a day on the beach you cannot miss the evening stroll. The most famous walk is that of viale Ceccarini full of shops, bars, restaurants; but you should not miss a walk on the beautiful Lungomare, renovated for some years and made only pedestrian (and cycle path): bars and restaurants have set up their tables along the promenade which is also full of fountains, squares and flower beds that recall the marine environment typical of Riccione. From viale Ceccarini you can then take viale Dante, another typical Riccione promenade. If you have also reached the end of viale Dante, don't hesitate to continue on viale Tasso, home to the "Non solo retro" market held every Wednesday in summer.
