Geographical notes
Rometta is perched on the Peloritani mountains.
Background
Frequencies in this area date back to the Iron Age with settlements of the Stentinellian type (prehistoric civilization which takes its name from the locality near Syracuse). It then became the seat of a Greek-Latin community that found refuge in these inaccessible places, so much so that between 725 and 780 AD. the bishop of Catania, Saint Leo of Ravenna, known as the Wonderworker, found refuge there. In 965 after a long siege it was conquered by the Arabs and subsequently liberated by the Byzantines of Maniace.
In 2002 a train accident occurred near Rometta Marea in which 8 people died.
