The two parishes Saalbach and Hinterglemm were combined to form the municipality of Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The Catholic Church and thus the former center of the community is located in Saalbach. There are also districts that are not independent communities: Wiesenegg (just before Hinterglemm) and Lengau (in the valley head). Saalbach and Hinterglemm are connected by the Glemmtaler Landesstrasse and approx 2 kilometers apart.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is located in Pinzgau on the Saalach the so-called Grauwackenzone or the Pinzgauer Grasberge (Kitzbühel Alps). The highest mountains are the Spielberghorn and the Hochkogel. The place was mentioned for the first time in 1222, and in 1489 it was granted market rights. Today Saalbach-Hinterglemm is an international tourist destination (approx. 90% of the businesses are tourist-oriented) and is located at 1003 meters above sea level (Saalbach) and 1100 meters above sea level (Hinterglemm). With over 16,000 guest beds, Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one of the largest tourist regions in Austria.

By plane

The closest international airport is Salzburg. From Salzburg connection with shuttle buses to the region. Since 2006 there has also been the possibility of a shared taxi for EUR 35 per person (Holiday shuttle) from Salzburg Airport to Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

By train

The nearest train station is Zell am See. From there on with the Postbus (one or two hour intervals during the day). Alternatively: by taxi from the taxi stand in front of the Zell am See train station.

In the street

  • From the south and east on the federal highway 31 Zell am See to Maishofen;
  • From the north from D (Bad Reichenhall) via federal highways 178 and 31 Saalfelden to Maishofen;
  • or: From the north from D (Munich) on the motorway to the exit Kufstein -South and on the main road over St.Johann and Saalfelden to Maishofen; Access on the short section of the Austrian motorway from the border to the Kufstein-Süd exit toll-free (but only here !!). The section of the route from St.Johannn to Kufstein is often overloaded when departing on Sunday after the lift closes, the previous Varante via Bad Reichenhall to the north is then an alternative.
From Maishofen about 15 km on the road through the Glemmtal to Saalbach and Hinterglemm.

mobility

In winter, a ski bus runs from Maishofen to the head of the valley and thus includes stops in Saalbach and Hinterglemm. The ski bus is free with a valid ski pass. At night there is the possibility to explore the nightlife with the so-called Nightliner.

In summer the regular lines of the Austrian Postbus run at their regular tariffs.

From Jausern via Saalbach and Hinterglemm to the head of the valley there are hiking trails away from the road, right next to the Saalach river.

There are 13 cable cars, 15 chair lifts and 27 drag lifts in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and the surrounding area. There are 200 km of slopes for skiing and snowboarding, 15 km of which are black, 95 km red and 90 km blue. Around 470 snow cannons are installed to prepare the slopes. Along with Leogang the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm / Leogang is formed.

The nightlife happens mainly in Saalbach. The Hinterglemm district is rather quiet and has only one disco, the Londoner, but numerous bars.

With Ischgl, Saalbach is without a doubt the most intense party and event ski region in Austria.

At the beginning of the winter season, Rave on Snow has been held every year since 1997. This event is organized by the partysans from Germany and celebrated successfully every year with approx. 5,000 - 10,000 music enthusiasts in cooperation with various sponsors and the Saalbach Tourism Association.
