Saignelégier is Swiss Municipality in the canton law in the French-speaking Switzerland.

Saignelégier is the capital of the Franches Montagnes district.
In addition to Saignelégier, the municipality also includes Les Cerlatez, La Theurre and Le Chaumont. On January 1, 2009, Goumois and Les Pommerats also merged with Saignelégier.
Saignelégier was first mentioned in a document in 1382. Due to its location at an important intersection, it developed into an important trading center in the Freiberg Mountains. The village belonged to the Freiberge lordship, which was subordinate to the Duchy of Basel. Initially, the lordship was administered from Schloss Spiegelberg near Muriaux, before the residence of the bailiffs Saignelégier was built in the 17th century. Between 1793 and 1815 Saignelégier belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont Terrible, which was transferred to the Département Haut-Rhin in 1800. At the Congress of Vienna it was decided that the place would go to the Canton of Bern in 1815. There Saignelégier became the capital of the Franches-Montagnes district. When the canton of Jura was founded on January 1, 1979, Saignelégier became part of the canton.
getting there
In Saignelégier the main road number 18 crosses from Basel and Delémont to La Chaux-de-Fonds with the main roads of Tavannes to the Goumois border crossing.
Saignelégier station is located on the narrow-gauge line of the CJ from La Chaux-de-Fonds to Glovelier. It is also possible over Le Noirmont to Tramelan and to arrive at Tavannes.
There are postbus lines from Saignelégier to Glovelier, as well as from Tramelan via Saignelégier to Goumois.

Tourist Attractions
- Parish Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. The church is located in the center of Saignelégier, it was built between 1927 and 1928 in the neo-baroque style. Inside it contains a richly decorated main altar from the first half of the 18th century. This comes from the Bellelay monastery.
- The moor lake is located around 4 kilometers outside of Saignelégier (towards Tramelan) Etang de la Gruère. The important natural attraction has been under nature protection since 1963. An educational trail leads around the lake.
- Les Cerlatez. The hamlet of Les Cerlatez consists of six characteristic Freiberg Jura farmhouses. These houses with their whitewashed facades date from the 17th and 18th centuries. In them, the living rooms, work rooms and stables are all united under one large roof, so that the harsh winds of the region are exposed to the smallest possible attack surface and so that one does not have to expose oneself to the weather on the way to work. However, there are a few more beautiful Jura houses in La Theurre and Saingelégier.
- Burgvogtei. The former castle bailiwick. In 1775, a prison tower was added to the defiant 17th century building with a hipped roof.
- The district Goumois is very picturesquely located on the Doubs and has a few very beautiful houses and a beautiful bridge, which is decorated with colored fish.

- Marché-Concours national des chevauxam. The Marché-Concours national des chevauxam takes place annually on the second Sunday in August in Saignelégier. This is the most important horse market for horses of the breed of the Freiberger.
- The hiking trail from Etang de la Gruère to Saingelégier and on to Goumois is highly recommended, as you cross the whole municipality. The section from Etang de la Gruère to Saignelégier is not very demanding, almost completely flat and leads over picturesque cow and horse pastures. However, the section from Saignelégier to Gourmois on the French border is a lot more demanding, very steep (around 500 meters difference in altitude) very narrow places and among other things must be a iron ladder happen! Good shoes with a profile are a must! Halfway at the end of a cow pasture, the view of Goumois is released and you can see the whole village.
- Sled dog racing. Takes place in the last weekend of January. About 800 dogs take part.Price: Entry: CHF 7 for both days.

Not well represented, except in Café du Soleil, there the village meets (see restaurant). Otherwise you continue to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Delémont or even Biel / Bienne.
