Geographical notes
Located on the eastern side of the Vallo di Diano, near the border with the Basilicata.
Background
It is the largest center in the Vallo di Diano, certainly populated since the 9th century BC, as evidenced by the vast necropolis, with burial and cremation tombs, attributable to a settlement of Villanovan culture. The news on the center of Consilinum, from which today's Sala Consilina, erected during the Lombard colonization, dates back to Roman times. The churches of San Leone IX, Santo Stefano and Sant'Eustachio date back to the period of Norman domination. In 1246 Frederick II destroyed the city in revenge for a conspiracy. The Aragonese, in 1497, destroyed it for the same reason. In the seventeenth century, Sala Consilina became a bishopric. The Grancia di San Lorenzo, the Church of San Pietro, the noble palaces of the Gatta, Vairo and Bigotti families date back to this phase. In the eighteenth century many other palaces were built, such as those of the families: Acciari, Grammatico, Bove, Falcone and Caratù.
From 1806 to 1860 it was the capital of the homonymous district of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy it was the capital of the district of the same name.

The nearest airport is that of Naples-Capodichino.
By car
The city is home to a junction of the A2 motorway, which makes it easily accessible from a large part of Italy; it is also crossed by the provincial roads 11 / e, 49, 52, 59, 92, 226, 242, 243, 295, 330 and 395.
By bus
The city is served by the replacement buses of the Railway Sicignano degli Alburni-Lagonegro, suspended since 1987.
