Sassello is a city of Liguria, in the province of Savona.

To know

Sassello, less than two thousand inhabitants in an area of ​​over 100 square kilometers, is located on the Apennine watershed between Liguria and Piedmont and 25 km away. from the Costa (Savona). It was awarded the orange flag by the Italian Touring Club.

Sassello is famous for its characteristic Amaretti and for the highly prized mushrooms. It also includes part of the Beigua Natural Park, the main protected natural area of ​​Liguria and heritage UNESCO.

When to go

Sassello is mainly a holiday resort so it tends to be active in spring and summer (especially August). Sassello's fame as a favorite place for mushroom picking (with card) implies that the town is very popular even in autumn.

One of the most important cultural hubs of the Savona hinterland, the recent "Mountain Guide" of Mondadori defines it as a "sparkling holiday resort", thanks to the vivifying mixture of air, sun, woods and meadows, which have made it famous as a destination tourist over the years. Since 1999 Sassello has been awarded the Orange Flag (first municipality in Italy), a tourist-environmental quality mark created as an official recognition for those qualities of the hinterland that represent examples of territory with particular natural, landscape and cultural resources, combined with the quality of tourist hospitality.

Sassello partially includes the Beigua Regional Natural Park which represents the largest regional protected area in the Liguria: covers about 18,000 hectares and represents the portion of the territory that develops behind Savona and of Genoa. The park is made up of mountains overlooking the sea and contains over 500 km of paths from which you can enjoy spectacular views.

  • Infiorata of Sassello. On the occasion of the feast of Corpus Domini, the traditional infiorata takes place in Sassello: colorful floral floor designs are created along the streets and squares of this beautiful historic center.

During the Easter period the recurrence of Thursday and Good Friday are celebrated: on Thursday the washing of the apostles' feet is recalled at the oratory of the church of San Giovanni Battista with subsequent procession to the church of the Holy Trinity, while on Good Friday it is recalled the passion of Jesus and the deposition from the cross, with the representation of the Holy Stairs and the procession of the dead Christ that from the Parish of the Holy Trinity reaches the basilica of the Immaculate Conception, followed by the various brotherhoods preceded by the bearers of wooden crosses. These crosses, as well as the statue of the dead Christ, are works of sculptors from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Sassello is very famous for its typical products including:

  • Amaretti di Sassello: produced since 1860, they are almond-based sweets, handmade and baked in the oven. These sweets are exported and renowned all over the world.

  • Cooked and raw salami: produced according to a recipe that is more than 100 years old, with a seasoning from 1 to 6 months.
