Esch-Sheikh Abd el-Qurna (Arabic:الشيخ عبد القرنة‎, al-Sheikh ʿAbd al-Qurna), el-Qurna for short (القرنة‎, al-Qurna, „the corner“), Is a village on the theban West bank of the Nile at the foot of the Western Theban Mountains. The most important official graves from the New Kingdom of the ancient Egyptian capital are located here Thebes.

background

The village has existed at least since Arab times and was named after the Arab saint of the same name, whose grave is also located here. It is about 5 kilometers from the banks of the Nile at the foot of the mountains. The houses were originally built next to and above the graves of officials, with the graves being used as cellars or stables.

The most famous modern family is that of ʿAbd er-Rassul, from whose ranks numerous grave robbers have emerged. Today their business is "civil", they run a small restaurant, among other things. There are also several alabaster factories in the village that produce exclusively for tourists.

To protect the antiquities, the Egyptian Antiquities Service (Supreme Council of Antiquities) decided to demolish the village and has carried it out since 2006. In the beginning, many a resident was able to postpone the demolition. In the course of 2009, the rest of the buildings were also demolished with the exception of a few in the area of the intersection. The former residents were moved to New Qurna in the north of eṭ-Ṭārif relocated. The residents are certainly not entirely happy about the state-funded new concrete buildings: they are at the “end of the world”, far away from the lucrative business with tourists, are not particularly large, and concrete is not particularly suitable for animal stalls. In 2006, before the resettlement, there were 24,239 inhabitants in the village.[1]

getting there

The village is easily accessible by car or bike Gazīrat er-Ramla at the place of the Nile ferry from Luxor over Hassan Fathy Village and Ṭōd el-Baʿīrāt reachable. The road to the south leads to Madīnat Hābū and el-Malqaṭagoing west to the Valley of the Queens and the one to the north leads to the rest of the sights like that Valley of the Kings.
