background

The origin of the complex lies in a Schwaige that was acquired by Duke Wilhelm V in 1597.

In 1616 his son, who later became Elector Maximilian I, acquired the Schleissheim estate, and from 1616-23 he had what is today Old lock build in the style of a late Renaissance country residence. Architects were among others. Heinrich Schön and Peter Candid.

At that time the Wittelsbachers hoped for the German imperial dignity, the new palace was planned as an imperial court and the dimensions of the palace and palace gardens were accordingly.

The first plans for the new palace complex with palace park were made around 1688. The prerequisite for the planned baroque pleasure garden was the water from the Isar, which was brought in via an extensive canal system.

In 1701, the construction of the New Castle begun, and, after various re-planning, from 1719-1726, completed under Joseph Effner. Only the western main wing of the originally planned monumental four-wing complex around the current palace park was realized. The splendid interiors of the showrooms were created by important contemporary artists such as Johann Baptist Zimmermann, Cosmas Damian Asam and Jacopo Amigoni. In 1819, under Leo von Klenze, the facade was redesigned in the classical style.

The New Castle was never really "inhabited" by the Wittelsbachers, it is now used by the Free State of Bavaria for them Museums and occasionally used for representative events.

The basic concept for the Castle Park In its current form, it was built at the same time as the New Palace was built in 1701 according to plans by Enrico Zucalli. The construction of the garden itself then took place from 1717 onwards by the French garden architect Dominique Girard, who also helped design the Nymphenburg. Girard adopted the essential concept of Zucalli's garden layout, but redesigned the parterre east of the palace and emphasized the depth effect of the axis of the main canal.

Lustheim Palace, at the other end of the large park axis of the main canal, was built on the occasion of the marriage of Elector Max Emanuels to the Austrian imperial daughter Maria Antonia in 1685 as a hunting and garden palace on an artificial island, which symbolizes the love island Kythera. Other semicircular buildings around Lustheim have been derelict and dismantled since the 18th century.

The destruction of the "Old Castle" during the Second World War was restored in 1972. The restoration of the castle gardens, which had been badly damaged in 1945, ended in 1999 with the renovation of the cascade.

Schleissheim Palace is the only large garden from the Baroque period that has remained essentially unchanged to this day.
