Schubra el-Cheima (also Shubra el-Kheima, Shubra el-Khaimah, Shubra al Khaymah, Shubra El Kheima, Shubra El Khayma, Arabic:شبرا الخيمة‎, Shubrā al-Khaimah) is the fourth largest city Egypt. It is located on the eastern bank of the Nile in the north of Cairo in the governorate el-Qalyūbīya. The city is part of the metropolitan area Greater Cairo.

background

City map of Schubrā el-Cheima

The city is relatively young and arose with the construction of the Summer Palace of Muḥammad ʿAlī (1769–1849) in the first half of the 19th century.

In 2006 there were just over a million inhabitants in the industrial city. The city owes its growth as a residential area for workers in the surrounding factories. This makes it larger than the capital of the el-Qalyūbīya governorate, Banhā. Important branches of industry are glass manufacture, cotton spinning and weaving, and textile manufacture. Asfour Crystal is Egypt's largest crystal glass manufacturer and employs around 28,000 people.

In the violent attack on a police building in Schubrā el-Cheima on August 20, 2015, the summer palace of Muḥammad ʿAlī was also badly damaged. Access is currently not possible!

By far the most important sight in the city is the 1 Summer Palace of Muḥammad ʿAlī(30 ° 6 '57 "N.31 ° 14 ′ 45 ″ E), MMC 602. Muhammad Ali was Egyptian viceroy from 1805 to 1848. The palace, which is located on the grounds of the Agricultural Faculty of ʿAin Shams University, has been open to visitors since 2009. The 2 Entrance(30 ° 6 ′ 49 ″ N.31 ° 14 ′ 33 ″ E) is on the west side. The palace is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Fridays, the entrance fee is LE 100 for foreigners and LE 50 for foreign students (as of 11/2019). If you come from the “Koleyat el-Zeraah” metro station, you unfortunately have to walk around the whole area. Photography is possible, videography in any case.

Work on this palace began in 1808 and continued until 1823. There are various pavilions in a large garden. The most important is the fountain pavilion - and only this is accessible.

The pavilion is roughly square, about 80 meters wide and 100 meters deep. Its entrance is on the south side. The palace consists of a four-sided, six-meter-wide gallery with a room at each corner. The gallery is open towards the middle, the roof is only supported by thin marble columns. The design comes from Mr. Bernardino Drovetti (1776–1852).

If you walk counter-clockwise, you will first come to the reception room in the southeast. The room is paneled with wood and has large mirrors. The walls and the floor are inlaid, the ceiling has gold-plated ornaments on a blue background. The room is equipped with numerous chairs and tea tables.

The next room is the room of names. The simple room with its marble floor has an arabesque-style ceiling, in the middle are the names of Mohammad Ali Pascha (right) and his son Ibrahim Pascha.

The third room is the billiard room, which impresses with its murals. The large format depictions show the palace of Orsay and a landscape representation with an obelisk, the temple of Baalbek and the Temple of Athena. The twelve women on the ceiling represent the twelve months.

The fourth room is the green dining room. On the ceiling you can see representations of food, dancers and ancient sites.

But the walkway is also designed. In the middle of all four sides is a podium with a painted dome on various topics, but the client, Muhammad Ali, is shown again and again. Topics are Greek mythology, shipping and Queen Victoria.

From this walkway one always has a view of the center of the palace, the nymphaeum. There is an octagonal platform in the middle of a water basin that is more than a meter deep. The water comes from different fountains, there are 24 crocodiles on the platform and four lions in the corners of the pool. You could go on the water in small boats, musicians played on the platform.

Almost all the furniture is original, only the chandeliers in the hallways are new. The 14 paintings by family members still in existence in 2006 were stolen and some of them were destroyed.
