Greater Cairo or Greater Cairo (English: Greater Cairo, Arabic:القاهرة الكبرى‎, al-Qāhira al-Kubrā) is the largest Metropolitan areaEgypt. It includes the governorate, among others Cairo and the city Cairo as well as the cities el-Gīza, Schubrā el-Cheima, 6th of October City and Helwan. Greater Cairo is the largest metropolitan area Africa, to Jakarta and Karachi the third largest in the Islamic world and the eleventh largest in the world. According to the 2006 census, around sixteen million people lived here, ten years later there are an estimated 20 million.

language

Dialect is spoken almost exclusively in Greater Cairo. This dialect is mostly referred to as Egyptian Arabic, although it is not used nationwide. Due to its distribution through film, radio and television, it is understood but not spoken by most Arabs.

In the street

Greater Cairo is surrounded by three ring highways, which are intended to relieve traffic, especially heavy goods traffic, in the major cities of the metropolitan region.

The three major cities of Cairo, el-Gīza and Schubrā el-Cheima are bordered by a 72-kilometer-long ring highway Cairo Ring Road, ‏الطريق الدائري القاهرة‎, aṭ-Ṭarīq ad-Dāʾirī al-Qāhira, the Autobahn 6, surrounded by numerous exits. From this, the Autobahn 11 branches off to the southwest Alexandria and in the southeast the Autobahn 24 to el-ʿAin es-Sukhna from. In the south-west of this branch also the trunk roads 20 (desert highway) Asyūṭ and 10 after el-Baḥrīya or in the south the trunk road 2 along the west bank of the Nile. The trunk roads 3 branch off to the east Sue 4 after Port Said and 45 after ez-Zaqāzīq from. You can reach it via trunk road 1, which branches off to the north of the ring road Banhā, Ṭanṭā and Alexandria.

Two more ring roads have now been completed: the 147-kilometer middle ring road,الطريق الدائري الأوسطي‎, aṭ-Ṭarīq ad-Dāʾirī al-Wasaṭī, and the 400 km long regional ring motorway, which was only completed in July 2018, Regional Ring Road,[2]الطريق الدائري الإقليمي‎, aṭ-Ṭarīq ad-Dāʾirī al-Iqlīmī. The middle ring road, too East Ring Road called, is located mainly in the east of Greater Cairo and is not closed. It connects the new big cities in Greater Cairo like El-ʿUbūr, Esch-Schurūq Citywho are still nameless Administrative capital of Egypt, 6th of October City and Sheikh Zayed City.

The outer one Regional Ring Road extends over seven governorates and connects a.o. the Alexandria Desert Road, the trunk road to el-Baḥrīya, the Oasis Road, the 6th of October City, el-Faiyūm, Wādī er-Raiyān, Dahshūr, Banhā, ez-Zaqāzīq, Bilbeis, New Cairo and the trunk road to el-ʿAin es-Sukhna. The Regional Ring Road forms a complete ring. This highway offers new opportunities to tourism in the Nile Valley, in Faiyūm with that in the Western desert connect to.

With the long-distance bus

There is an extensive long-distance bus network. Major bus stations include Cairo Airport and et-Turgomān in Cairo, ʿAbūd in Schubrā el-Cheima and el-Munīb in el-Gīza.

By plane

By train

With trains from Egyptian National Railways a large number of Egyptian cities can be reached from Cairo. The southern route runs from Cairo via el-Gīza, el-Minyā and Luxor to Aswan.

The route to Alexandria runs through Banhā, Ṭanṭā and Damanhūr. Only the regional trains stop in Schubrā el-Cheima. Other railway lines run from Cairo via Banhā, Maḥalla el-Kubrā and el-Manṣūra to Dumyāṭ, from Cairo via Ismailia to Port Said as well as from Cairo to Sue.

By bus

Greater Cairo is covered with a huge, unfortunately difficult to understand route network. The bus routes are mostly operated by the Cairo Transport Authority.

With the metro

There are three metro lines in Greater Cairo. Line 1 connects el-Marg in the northeast of Cairo with Helwan. Line 2 connects Schubrā el-Cheima with el-Munīb in el-Gīza. Line 3 should be in the future Imbāba connect in el-Gīza with the Cairo airport. Currently only the section from el-ʿAtaba to el-ʿAbbāsīya is in operation. More under Cairo.

Tourist Attractions

Cairo has numerous attractions. This includes numerous buildings by Islamic old town, Churches and modern buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in downtown Cairo. There are also several internationally renowned museums in Cairo. There are important galleries in el-Gīza and on the Nile island el-Gazīra, on which the district ez-zamālik is located.

In Cairo and el-Gīza there are around a thousand restaurants and cafes with national and international cuisine. In addition to the well-known international fast food chains, there are also local chains with more Egyptian cuisine.

Anyone looking for an extensive nightlife in Egypt will almost exclusively only find it in Cairo.
