The Wadi en Natrun (also Wadi Natrun, Wadi el-Natrun, Wadi 'n-Natrun, Ouadi el-Natroun, Satrontal, Sketis or Sketic desert, Arabic:وادي النطرون, Wādī an-Naṭrūn, „Satrontal"), also Valley of the Monasteries called, lies in Egypt, at the edge of Western desert and des Nile deltas, about halfway on the motorway between Cairo and Alexandria. Administratively, the Natrontal belongs to the governorate el-Buḥeira. Today there are four inhabited monasteries here as well as numerous monastery ruins. Surname
There are several ancient names for the modern name Wādī en-Naṭrūn. The Greeks named the area Sketis (Σκετις or Σκετες), What the asceticism means and indicates its function as a place of residence and work of early monks.
