History

The history of Schwendau dates back to the early 13th century when it was known as Swentowe which translates to clearing of a pasture. This is reflected today in the emblem of the town, which prominently features an axe.

Cavalry Hill chapel

Easily recognisable round chapel with half spherical cupola, it's a protected heritage monument built in 1845 with wall frescoes from 1850. The altar features a cross composition dated to ca. 1770. Valley ski route to Schwendau-Hippach

Schwendau is close to the Zillertal 3000 ski region which is directly accessible through the 1 Horbergbahn and features over 200 km of groomed ski runs, all accessible with a single ski pass. There are also facilities for tobogganing, with several runs in the surroundings including Gerlosstein, the longest run in the Ziller Valley. There is also a natural track in nearby Mayrhofen starting from the Wiesenhof inn at 1560 m, and a family track at the Lacknerbrunn inn with a length of 2.5 km.
