Following the rings - Seguindo os Anéis

This article is a itinerary .

the itinerary following the rings is located in New Zealand.

Understand

After 30 nominations, winning 17 Oscar statuettes and being considered the most victorious trilogy in world cinema, Lord of the Rings continued to stir the interests of his fans on the subject, mainly to know the original locations in the New Zealand, land of its director, Peter Jackson.

Moved by the least interest, I was able to visit for fifteen days a large part of the existing locations (or which are still preserved) and also get to know some places that, in one way or another, were present in the films. The journey passed through several cities and does not follow the trilogy's script, but rather a travel logic to appreciate not only the locations, but also everything that the country has to offer.

This itinerary is about that, a trip to locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, within New Zealand and also to the points of greatest tourist interest.

Get ready

Preparing for the trip basically consists of obtaining the necessary documents, preparing the suitcase (preferable backpack) and a bit of physical conditioning for the inevitable hikes. With this, any traveler can follow this itinerary and add other parts that are interesting.

Documents

For Brazilians, only a valid passport (six months) and a driver's license (required for car rental) are required. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 (ninety) days.

It is good that you have an English transcript or translation of the driver's license for presentation, if necessary, to the car rental company or traffic authority. This transcript can be done by you and authenticated at a Brazilian or New Zealand consulate or embassy anywhere in the world. Don't forget to bring the original to the conference.

Suitcase (backpack)

To access various locations at certain points of the trip it is necessary to walk for minutes or hours. For this reason it is more appropriate to use a backpack where you can carry at least one sweater, water, camera and video and some personal hygiene products. Some larger backpacks have a smaller one built in, known as an "attack backpack", which pair is perfect for a trip like this.

Your suitcase/backpack must contain at least the following items:

  • sneakers with good soles, resistant and comfortable for walking, crossing streams and small climbing on rocks or ravines;
  • Tracksuit for rain and cold. Depending on the time of year, the rains are constant. At other times, it snows in some parts of the country (not advisable to go between May and September);
  • quick-drying shorts such as naylon or dry-fit. Essential for hiking
  • short-sleeved and long-sleeved t-shirts, primarily for use in the middle of national park woods.

physical conditioning

Hiking with ascents, descents, crossing bridges and ravines can tire those who are not in good physical condition. It is not necessary to be prepared to participate in a marathon, but it is interesting that at least you can walk at a slow pace for two or three hours without too much difficulty.

To arrive

For this itinerary you must inevitably land on the International Airport in Auckland, on the north island.

Starting from São Paulo there are flights through Lan Chile and Argentine Airlines, with scales in Chile Santiago and Buenos Aires. The flight time between these cities and Auckland varies between 13 and 14 hours non-stop. So arm yourself with a book, crosswords or other entertainment.

if you are in Australia or close to it (Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, etc) it is possible to fly by airlines How many, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines or Royal Brunei. The latter offers great prices between Southeast Asia and New Zealand. There is also the option of the low-fare company Virgin Blue, from the same group as Quem that maintains regular flights between Auckland and several cities in the Australia and Oceania.

There is no better way to follow this itinerary than by car, meaning you should rent a car in Auckland and move on. THE New Zealand has a large fleet of rental vehicles ranging from small 1.0 cars to large van's and trailers with different prices at different agencies, some multinationals like Hertz and Avis and other places that provide great services.

It is safe to recommend small agencies for the lease. In addition to the lower value, the bureaucracy is minimal compared to a large agency and the vehicles are equivalent. However, please note that it is necessary to find a rental company that has offices in Auckland, Wellington, Picton and Christchurch as you need to leave your car in Wellington to make the crossing between the two islands and rent another car in Picton. This saves on the value of the ferry fare between the two islands and also on the rental.

One of the agencies that has this service is the Bargain Rental Cars, a small New Zealand agency that has offices in the cities informed and also a transfer service from the airport/port. The price varies between 20 to 45% cheaper than the big agencies for vehicles of the same category.

circle

The itinerary goes from the North Island to the South Island, passing (not necessarily) through the most interesting locations of the trilogy. The script is:

  • Kill Kill - Small town near Auckland where it is Hobbiton, where the county of Hobbits was built
  • Taupo/Tongariro National Park - National park where you can find Mount Tongariro, Tower of Sauron and also the country of Orcs
  • Wellington - Various locations
  • Nelson - city where the jewelry store responsible for making the rings and the Hobbits brewery are located
  • arrowtown - region of some of the most beautiful locations
  • Mount Cook National Park - the lighthouses of Minas Tirith

Most of the locations can be accessed by car and/or by walking. However, for some it is necessary to participate in a tour with tourism companies in the region. This "difficulty" appears for two reasons: 1) many locations are within reserved or privately owned areas that only specialized companies are authorized to access and 2) some locations are "lost" in the middle of unknown regions and can pass without being seen if there is no guide attached.

A great tip is to look in Auckland for a book called The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook written by Ian Brodie, New Zealand author and photographer constantly hired by film companies to guide their teams across the country. This book provides the complete list of locations from the three films with information ranging from location, routes and even latitude and longitude data to GPS location.

If you have time, you can buy the book autographed by the author online. [1].
