background

getting there

By train

To get to Shimla you have to go first Kalka. From there one drives Narrow gauge railway, an average of five hours through the mountains to Shimla.

From Delhi the most interesting train to Kalka for tourists is the Howrah-Delhi-Kalka Mail (№ 2311) who leaves the New Delhi Railwaystation at 21:40 and arrives in Kalka early in the morning at 4:40. A narrow-gauge train is available as a connecting train at 5:05 am and 5:30 am.

After arriving at Kalka train station, go to the main building and go to the ticket office and enter General ticket to Shimla, as you usually have to queue there for a long time. The ticket can be purchased at a counter at platform 4 and 5, from where the Toy train starts up Chair Car (135 Rs) or First class(around Rs 280). Due to the overcrowded "cattle wagons" 2nd class, this is highly recommended. If necessary, it makes more sense to reserve early in the foreigners booking office on the upper floor of the New Delhi train station. Trains to Shimla leave at 4:00, 5:05, 5:30, 6:00: 6:30 (*), 11:35, 12:10, 12:45 (*) approximately 4-6 hours.

  • ) only between May 1st and July 15th; September 15 - October 30; December 15 - January 15.

  • Loveena. The Loveena at The Ridge offers Indian and Chinese cuisine. There are also a few western dishes. For Shimla the prices are okay. For a vegetarian main course you have to pay between 80-110 Rs, for a non-vegetarian one between 100-140 Rs. However, the beautiful view and nice decor are somewhat muted by the constant Hindi music.

accommodation

  • YMCA. Central to The Ridge located, right past the church and then only a few meters up the stairs. Rooms with shared bathroom and toilet cost Rs 310 for one person. Both bathrooms and toilets are above average clean by Indian standards. The price includes breakfast (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) in the in-house restaurant, which otherwise requires reasonable prices. Anyone who has their laundry washed gets them back the next evening. The staff is friendly and speaks English very well. Luggage can be stored for Rs 10 after checking out (12:00 noon).
