In 1959 this nature reserve was divided by parts of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve The film "Mosquito Coast" with Harrison Ford was shot here in 1986.

The Hummingbird Highway borders the nature reserve to the east. There are no towns or roads in the entire area.

Tourist Attractions
- Petroglyph Cave. A 3 km long cave in which many vessels from the early to late classical period have been found. An official permit from the Department of Archeology is required for a visit.
- Mount Margaret. 940 meters above sea level.
- Baldy Sibun. 1000 meters above sea level.
- Sibun Gorge. Spectacular and one of the oldest canyons in Central America.
