Politically, the city belongs to the Forcalquier arrondissement and is the administrative seat of the canton of Sisteron.
The river cuts through the town of Sisteron Durance two mountain ranges. It is not surprising that people have settled at this strategically favorable location for over 4000 years. The Romans took part in the Via Domitia from northern Italy to Arles here a settlement with the name Segustero founded.
In the 5th century AD, a bishopric was built here, in the 6th century. the city came under the rule of the Ostrogoths. In the 11th century, the Count of Forcalquier built a fortress that secured the northern border of the county of Provence. The city probably bears the name from this time Gate of Provence. Sisteron has been under the French crown since 1483. During the Huguenot Wars, from 1562 to 1594, Sisteron was fiercely fought over and was besieged twice. The walls and citadel that still exist today date from this time.
During the Second World War, the citadel was used again to accommodate "indésirables", "disliked elements", anarchists, communists and Jews (before they were abducted); after a bombardment on August 19, 1944, the city was ruled out by the Riez allied allies.
