background

The Smolensk Oblast lies in a wooded, hilly landscape and belongs to the central economic region of the country. Industries are the wood industry, chemistry, electrical engineering, textile industry and mechanical engineering. The river Dnieper flows through the oblast, it comes from the northeast from the Valdai Heights and continues through Belarus and Ukraine.

The oblast is home to some of the oldest cities. But a number of wars were also fought here. In the Middle Ages it was the incursions of the Mongols, later the power struggles with Poland and Lithuania. Napoleon traveled through the country with his troops, and finally two world wars raged here and destroyed a large part of the cultural monuments. These have been partially rebuilt and make the Oblast and especially the city of Smolensk an interesting tourist destination.
