The region's ancient indigenous heritage mixed with the more recent Gurma migrants, hailing from the eastern part of the Niger curve between Ouagadougou is Niamey, who brought with them the political system of the main leaders. Merchants and artisans joined this structure Sudanese (the Mandinka, from the historian Mali) and Hausa, a dynamic force since the 16th century. THE Germans they chose Sokodé at the end of 1897, to establish an outpost.

The city developed in the pre-colonial era as a commercial crossroads on the route of the kola nut between Ghana is Benin. It is currently at the center of the only north-south road of Togo, which connects the capital Lome to the Burkina Faso. Urbanization accelerated during colonization. The city is made up of older villages that have now become its neighborhoods.

Sokodé continues to be governed by a balanced system between a municipal administration and tribal leaders. Historically, the heads of various villages have been included in a leadership council, the Tchaoudjo.

From the habitat point of view, the city can be divided into two parts: the center, with a very high density of inhabitants, of a traditional type, and the increasingly less dense suburbs as you move away from the center. Modern materials increasingly replace traditional ones (i.e. mud bricks) in line with the previous progression.

Celebrated the night before Adossa, Gadao's function is to thank the ancestors for the bountiful harvests. Gadao-Adossa, or Festival of knives, is an initiation rite that originates from the Semassi warriors who demonstrate their strength and courage by facing physical challenges. The next day is the Kosso, the Women's festival, where women dance in the municipal park of Sokodé.

Among others, the most important festivals are held by different Sokodé clans. At most festivals, traditional dancers are invited from the region, as are knights who imitate Semassi warriors, spinning at full speed through the crowd.
