Church of San Bartolo
  • 2 Church of San Bartolo, Via Vittorio Emanuele III. There is no reliable data relating to the construction of the first churches on the island of Stromboli. Regarding S. Bartolo it is known that in 1811 the bishop of Lipari Silvestro Todaro made the first pastoral visit. The first churches (that of S. Vincenzo and that of S. Bartolo in Stromboli and that of S. Vincenzo in Ginostra), born in the 1700s, were small and essential. During the 19th century, activities related to the navy developed on the island and in 1891 the population reached 2716 inhabitants. The Strombolians then built new larger and more beautiful churches which were completed in the following decades. The churches of the island were built, brick by brick, with the contribution of all its inhabitants. Each offered what they could: money, work, equipment, materials. Whoever had nothing else to offer, every Sunday before mass, brought a basket of stones. Because everyone wanted to contribute to the construction of the sacred building.

Beach life

The beach of Piscità and Strombolicchio
  • One of the most beautiful beaches of Stromboli is that of 4 Old Forge, it can be reached by going along the entire beach of Scari and proceeding south of the pier, after passing a series of rocks (300 m from the pier) that separate the two beaches. The environment is spectacular and evocative due to the expanses of sand that descend from the top of the volcano to the sea.
  • On the north shore the long beach of 5 Ficogrande, separate from that of Scari from Punta Lena, is characterized by its fine black sand. From this natural port, which housed the structures for the repair of fishing boats, once the sailing ships of the island, the famous Marticani.
  • Beyond Ficogrande begins an area of small coves bordered by black rocks, mixed with pebbles and sand; follows a cliff called long beach overlooked by white houses. It is the area of 6 Piscity where there are also an old tower-shaped windmill and the famous Aeolus cave. Outdated Punta Labranzo begins the cliff of the north-west coast, where the beaches disappear because the sciara del fuoco begins.
  • One of the most exclusive beaches is that of Scalo Balordi.

Safety

The vehicle of the Carabinieri

In Stromboli there is no crime, every aspect of life is marked by slow and serene rhythms. Even the bicycles or scooters used do not require safety measures (where should they flee?). Obviously it is always advisable to maintain a minimum of attention and not to leave valuables in sight or in abandonment.

  • 7 Emergency medical Service (ASL n.5), Via Vittorio Emanuele (A short distance from the Church of San Vincenzo), 39 090 986097.
  • 8 Carabinieri, Via G.Picone (Scari), 39 090 986021. The funniest aspect of this remote police station is the presence of an unusual electric vehicle used to move around the island.
