By taxi

To travel from town to town the best way is the collective taxi, cars leave from crossroads, bus stations ... when they are full, it is possible to pay for several places if you are in a hurry.

In general, more or less formal bus stations are found near the bazaars of each city.

By car

The signage takes into account international standards but the indication of cities is usually written in the Cyrillic alphabet.

The state of the roads is quite random depending on the axes, potholes and crevices of all kinds punctuate the routes, the manholes are sometimes deprived of their trap. Public lighting remains parsimonious, many areas are in complete darkness as soon as night falls. It is generally good to resort to the use of a 4x4 if you plan to travel in isolated regions, the disastrous state of the tracks makes any passage in a conventional vehicle impossible. Conversely, even on the best roads, it is better to avoid driving a low-profile vehicle. The driving style of the locals is a little sporty and few people wear seat belts, despite the sometimes excessive police presence.

Great care should therefore be taken at all times even if the traffic is relatively light.

Mountain roads can remain cut off to traffic for several days, following fairly frequent landslides or just because of snow.

A large proportion of the local vehicle fleet suffers from obsolescence, the lighting is often insufficient or even absent. Spare parts are difficult to obtain, especially concerning the electronic management units which equip the most recent models.

The supply of fuel and ingredients is not always optimally assured, not to mention that gas stations and garages are extremely rare on the axes as soon as one leaves the capital. Mechanical damage can become hell if a lot of edge has not been planned. Think carefully about your journeys taking into account the risks of shortages and adopt a flexible driving to prevent any waste, a golden opportunity to become a true eco-driver ...

Driving at night is to be avoided outside the cities, do it only in convoys with people you trust if you cannot give it up.

Speed limits:

  • Route: 90 km / h
  • City : 60 km / h

Driving after consuming alcohol is strictly prohibited.

To speak

The official language is Tajik but everyone understands Russian (historical past obliges ...). English is on the other hand less practiced by the people despite a growing presence of visitors.

To buy

Five hundred somoni banknote

The national currency of Tajikistan is the somoni (somoni, TJS).

The US dollar and the euro are virtually the only currencies accepted at exchange offices.

No credit card is accepted to pay for purchases.

Housing

In the cities there are hotels of different standing, in Duchambé a few guest houses for travelers allow to meet people in particular:adventurer's inn, Pulod Tolis 5/11, north of Rudaki, you can put your tent in the courtyard for a few dollars, bathroom, kitchen In the Pamirs and the Fan Mountains, there are homstays allowing you to stay with locals, they are generally indicated by a blue sign. It is possible to pitch your tent anywhere outside the cities, Central Asia being a region of strong nomadism you will only be a nomad more, in the event of a galley "hospitality" is not an empty word and no one will leave you sleeping homeless.

The political situation is currently stable, but care should be taken not to stray from the roads, especially near border areas where many anti-personnel mines may remain.

No problem with delinquency, that doesn't mean you have to relax your attention or show off your own riches. For small night walks, no particular risk either but avoid non-lit areas all the same, bring someone with them whenever possible.

Women are recommended to dress modestly.

Health

Before going to a doctor or any hospital establishment, contact the embassy to obtain the address of a reliable practitioner depending on where you are and the pathology to be treated.

A Russian military hospital exists in the capital, it even includes an emergency service located at: 120 boulevard Roudaki in Dushanbe. It should be noted that this establishment does not have in particular a scanner or similar, evacuation to a third country may become inevitable.

Treatment is chargeable but reimbursable if you have previously taken out travel insurance also covering medical repatriation.

Some health advice:

  • do not use tap water for drinking or brushing teeth, prefer capped bottled mineral water
  • rinse and peel the fruits before eating them
  • prefer well-cooked meat and avoid raw dairy products
  • bring condoms bought in Europe if you plan to take the next step
  • in case of chronic illness, bring a sufficient quantity of prescribed medication in advance
  • do not approach stray dogs (contagious bites ...)

It is advisable to keep your vaccines up to date, cases of serious diseases (paralyzing or fatal ...) have been reported since the beginning of 2010.

Respect

Ramadan date

  • From April 24 to May 23, 2020 (Year 1441 AH)
  • From April 13 to May 12, 2021 (Year 1442 AH)
  • From April 2 to 1er May 2022 (Hegira year 1443)

Majority of Muslims insist on local sighting of the crescent moon to mark the start of Ramadan, but others insist on calculating the new moon or declaring it saudi to determine the start of the month. Since the first crescent after the new moon is not visible everywhere at the same time, the start and end dates of the month depend on what is visible in each location. Therefore, the dates vary from country to country, but usually only one day.

As Tajikistan is a fairly conservative Muslim country, there are a few rules to follow to ensure that your stay goes smoothly:

  • avoid bathing too close to a house
  • not to touch the head of a child (oh how cute this little one ...) nor to shake the hand of a woman
  • remove your shoes at the entrance to places of worship and houses if you are asked to do so
  • do not distribute or offer objects to children
  • ask permission before taking someone's picture, offer to send them a copy as soon as you return home (this will be a great pleasure for them and they will be grateful to you ...)
  • avoid any aggressive attitude and do not raise your voice
  • do not show signs of affection in public (holding hands or kissing ...) note that 2 men can hold hands perfectly, it is a sign of great friendship without any other connotation
  • do not accept an invitation to have tea, eat ... on the first try, always refuse 2 or even 3 times, accept the 4th time, because it is a real invitation, the 1st times are more a form of politeness
