Tampere (fi. Tampere) [1] is Finland's second largest city, located about 180 kilometers from Helsinki.
History
Tampere is sometimes called Finland's Manchester, as most of Finland's industry was located here in the 19th century. The city was founded in 1779.

Getting to Tampere
Tampere is an important hub for road and train traffic. There are relatively good connections in all directions.
The airport is located in Birkala (fi: Pirkkala). Finnair [2], Blue 1 [3] and Ryanair [4] and some charter flights use the airport.

[6] Tampere is an important hub in Finland's railway network, so it is easy to travel by train to Tampere from Ostrobothnia (Seinäjoki, Vasa, Kokkola, Oulu and Lapland, from Pori, Turku, Jyväskylä, Pieksämäki and especially from Helsinki: trains run between Tampere and Helsinki 1-3 times an hour.
There are roads to and from Tampere in all directions. Highway 3 is the highway all the way to Helsinki. Other highways go to Turku (rv 9), Jyväskylä (rv 9), Vasa (rv 3), Pori (rv 11), Raumo (rv 12) as well Lahti (rv 12).
Relocation in Tampere
Single tickets in local transport cost (in March 2010) 2.50 € and the ticket is valid for 1 hour. The tourist ticket costs € 6.00 and € 4.00 / extra day. Timetables and route maps can be found atTampere Public Transport Agency's websites[7] (in Finnish / English) and on paper Palvelupiste Frenckell at Frenckellsplatsen (Frenckellinaukio) north of Centraltorget (Keskustori). Please note that at night (00-04) it costs twice as much to take a bus. With the tourist ticket, the night surcharges do not apply, it applies 24 hours a day.
It is no longer possible (since 1988) to use trains within the city limits of Tampere. It is still possible to hop on the regional train and travel to border municipalities Nokia, Lempäälä and Orivesi. If you have a student card that is approved by VR, you get a 50% discount, ie a trip to Nokia costs only 1.50 €.
Within a few years, it will again be possible to travel by train within Tampere, in which case local transport tickets will also be valid on the train.
There are plenty of parking garages in the center of Tampere. You can drive to all the car parks via the "Centrumringen" (streets Satakunnankatu - Hämeenpuisto - Tampereen valtatie - Vuolteenkatu - Rautatienkatu).
