Regions
The Slovak Tatras are made up of four different mountain ranges, the High Tatras, the Western Tatras, the Biesker Tatras and the Low Tatras. The High Tatras are mostly used as a synonym for the Tatras in German, which is at least imprecise, as the High Tatras only make up about a fifth of the Tatras. The Tatra Mountains are geologically very different. While the High Tatras consists of granite and is mainly based on the Polish side characterized by a multitude of very deep mountain lakes, e.g. the West Tatras are made of limestone and have many caves. There are, for example, over 300 in the Dolina Chocholowska alone.
