Chelyabinsk is well served by trains. Count around 36 h travel since Moscow, forty hours since Saint PETERSBOURG and around 10 h since Kazan.

Note that trains going east (Siberia, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk...) go through the Kazakhstan, which requires a visa. A detour through Yekaterinburg may be preferable.

Chelyabinsk is not a tourist city, so few people speak English (let alone French). Basic knowledge of Russian can be useful, and knowing the Cyrillic alphabet is very useful, if only for deciphering the signs.
