Background

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the origins of Tempio Pausania are not well known. However, it is known that the Romans, having defeated the local populations, settled in the site of Monti Pinna. Certainly, two small Roman villages stood near Tempio, Gemellae and Templum, over time unified. Gemellae is mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary, while Templum derives from the presence of an ancient temple to Castor and Pollux, the protectors of the legendary Roman garrisons of the area (oppidum of Templum, Calangiani, Luras), whose tradition reports these Dioscuri as the main helpers of the Roman victory over the peoples of Corsi and Balari. The curatoria of Gemini takes its name from the ancient Gemellae, of which Tempio will become the capital. Of it, cited as Templo, it is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1173, but still in 1300 the Villa Temples it is a small town. Under the Pisan government it experienced a period of great splendor and around the end of 1400, following the depopulation of the coasts, the territory was granted as a fief to the powerful Carroz family. In 1506 the bishops' chairs of Civita and Ampurias were unified, in 1543 a Franciscan convent was established and in 1621, after the decline of Olbia following a serious plague and raids by Saracen pirates, it became a bishop's seat. Tempio will become the capital of the Giudicato di Gallura, together with the neighboring one Calangianus. In 1665 there was a college of Piarist fathers and in 1687 a monastery of Capuchin nuns settled there. It obtains municipal autonomy in 1771 and during the nineteenth century it is the fourth Sardinian city. In 1807 it became the seat of the prefecture and in 1836 it was elevated to the rank of Royal City by King Carlo Alberto. In 1874, in Tempio, Giuseppe Garibaldi was elected deputy of the Kingdom. At the beginning of the twentieth century, in honor of the ancient bishopric of Olbia, the name of Phausania was added to Tempio (the word "Phausania" originates from the toponym "Pasana", a river that flows in the Terranova valley and flows into the Gulf of Olbia) and in 1915 the city of Tempio Pausania will give birth to the Sassari Brigade. The municipality of Tempio Pausania was the capital of the Olbia-Tempio province from 2001 to 2016, now suppressed.
