State

Tripolitania is the northwestern region of the Libya which roughly corresponds to the ancient kingdom of the same name. It also includes the entire modern administrative district of Tripolitania.

To know

The word Tripolitania comes from the Greek Τρίπολις that is three cities: it was the three main cities of Punic origin on the west coast of Libya, or Oea, Sabratha, is Leptis Magna, the last two of which were abandoned on the occasion of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, which allowed the former to change its name into Tripoli.

Background

Tripolitania has always been a land of conquests. Originally, the region was inhabited by Berbers. Before the Romans made Tripolitania a very prosperous area, the region passed under the hands of the Phoenicians and later the Carthaginians. In the 6th century the region was incorporated into the Byzantine Empire, but not before being occupied by the Vandals in the first half of 400 AD. The Ottoman Turks maintained control of the area from 1500 to the early 1900s, a period in which Italy colonized Libya.

Spoken languages
