Trnava - a city in the west Slovakia, 45 km east of Bratislava. Capital city the country of Trnava. Trnava has a rich history as a medieval city. Already in the 17th century it was a university town. It was also the seat of the archbishop, and the Catholic Church influenced the city throughout its history. The city has many churches and a well-preserved baroque city center; it was called "little Rome".

Characteristic

Trnava was industrialized from the beginning of the 20th century. It has become one of the centers of the Slovak automotive industry with a large PSA Peugeot car factory built in 2005 and many smaller auto parts manufacturers. There is a nuclear power plant near the town near the village of Jaslovske Bohunice.

By plane

1 Bratislava airport (IATA: BTS) is the closest commercial airport, located approximately 40 km to the south. Another nearby airport is 2 Vienna International Airport (IATA: VIE). The small airport serving mainly ultra-light aviation is located about 10 km to the west near the village of Boleraz.

By rail

3 Trnava Railway Station. Trnava is situated on the main Slovak railway route (z Bratislava down Kosice). Therefore, it is quite easy to reach by rail from most of the main Slovak cities. The train journey from Bratislava only takes about 30 minutes. Two more railway lines leave Trnava: one to the west (Smolenice, Kuty) and the other to the south-east to the city of Sered. Trnava has direct rail connections from Vienna, Warsaw and Kiev.

By car

  • The D1 motorway bypasses Trnava in the south. To reach the city, at the Trnava junction (exit number 50), take the R1 expressway north.
  • The R1 expressway from Nitra ends in the city itself.
  • The national road I / 51 connects Trnava over the Little Carpathians with localities Senica, Holič and Hodonín.

By bus

Trnava is located on the main Slovak D1 motorway, near the R1 intersection. It has a good connection with the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava and nearby cities such as Nitra, Piestany and Trencin. 4 Bus Station it is located near the center of Trnava, next to the train station. There are buses departing to / from Bratislava at least once an hour, more often during rush hour. Many people commute from Trnava to Bratislava and also from the surrounding villages to Trnava. The bus journey from Bratislava to Trnava takes approximately 50 minutes. There are direct bus lines to some major European cities such as Prague, Vienna and Munich.

Communication

Most of the tourist attractions can be reached on foot from the center. A car or taxi is the preferred option to get to the outskirts of the city. In rush hour traffic jams are quite common. Trnava has a public transport system consisting of 16 bus lines. However, their frequency and comfort are rather inadequate. There are several bike paths in the city.

Active recreation

  • Watch football at the Anton Malatinskeho stadium, the stadium of FC Spartak Trnava. They play Super League, the top-tier of Slovak football, and qualify often for European tournaments. The national team also plays their home games here. Rebuilt in 2015 with a capacity of 19,000 spectators, the stadium is close to the train station and the city center.

Shopping

City center (streets Stefanikov and Hlavna, Trinity Square) has long been a traditional shopping area. The oldest shopping center, Jednota, is located there. Modern shopping centers have opened outside the center. The Max shopping center is located about 1 km from the city center, near the bus and train stations. In the northern part of the city, a large modern retail cluster has been created around the Arkadia Park and the Tesco shopping center.

Gastronomy

The Na Mlyne restaurant, hidden in a tree-lined alley on the way to Hrnciarovce nad Parnou, is surely one of Trnava's secret treasures.

What to drink

The city of Trnava is one of the few in Slovakia with its own, separate brand of beer. The Sessler Brewery is located north of the city on the Pri Kalvarii road and has its own restaurant. There is also a pub in the city center, on the main street near Trinity Square, look for "Passage Europa" in front of the town hall which serves only Sessler beer. Sessler beer comes in three varieties, light, dark and special, and it doesn't disappoint!

Northeast of the city, on Oresianska, is the Mrva & Stanko winery. This wine brand was founded in 1997 and uses local grape varieties grown in the Little Carpathians. Tasting sessions are available.
