The Republic Chuvashia (Чувашия) is in the Russian federal district Volga. It is surrounded in the west by the republic Mordovia, in the northwest of the oblast Nizhny Novgorod, in the northeast of the republic Mari El and in the south of Tatarstan and the oblast Ulyanovsk.

The Chuvash are among the Turkic peoples. They are descendants of the Volga Bulgarians, which in the 8th century were islamized. From the 13th century they belonged to the Mongolian khanate of Golden Horde, then to Kazan Khanate. In the 16th century they came to Russia and a large number of them converted to the Orthodox faith.

The Chuvash population is around 65%, the official language is the Chuvash language. The share of Russians is around 25%.
