The Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is located east of Moscow in a flat area through which the Volga, Oka and their tributaries flow. The capital Nizhny Novgorod and its surroundings are industrially and economically well developed, a large part of the oblast is dominated by agriculture, the cultivation of grain and livestock are essential branches of business.
The painted and popular wooden dolls that can be plugged into each other are interesting for tourists. They are known as Matryoshka-Dolls, (Матрёшка), made from birch or linden wood, sometimes also referred to as Кукла, Doll. The smallest figure inside is the Кукoлка. The first of these matryoshkas were made around 1890. Less known, but 200 years older, is the production of Chochloma-Dishesthat is carved from wood and colorfully painted. The lacquer painting is amazingly waterproof and durable, maybe we just caught some well-painted pieces. We have not yet investigated whether the varnish comes off with vodka.
In the meantime, these figures are not only made in the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod.
