The oblast Kostroma (Russian: Костромская область) located in Central Russia. It borders on the oblasts Vologda, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, Kirov and Nizhny Novgorod.

The oblast in the northeast of central Russia is quite sparsely populated. Over 70% of the area is forested, mainly with spruce, pine, birch and aspen. In addition to the timber industry, hunting also plays a role. In agriculture, the focus is on animal breeding, although the cultivation of grain and vegetables has increased in recent years. The region is to the south of the Volga flowed through, which is fed by numerous tributaries. Over 40 species of fish live in the waters.
