The oblast Kirov lies in the Russian federal district Volga. It is surrounded by the oblasts Nizhny Novgorod, Kostroma, Vologda and Arkhangelsk as well as the republics Komi, Mari El, Udmurtia and Tatarstan, in the northeast it borders on the region Perm.
