Zhukov-Oka power pole.

Dzerzhinsk

The city, founded in 1920 as Rastjapino (Растя́пино), was renamed Dzerzhinsk in 1929 (Дзержи́нск). It is known to older people because of the prisoner-of-war camp 469 located here. For a long time it was a center for the manufacture of Soviet chemical weapons. Production has permanently contaminated the environment and drinking water with arsenic compounds and dioxins. The place was nominated in 2006 as one of the most heavily contaminated places in the world, which was extended in 2007 and 2013, as renovations hardly take place. (It makes sense that Dzerzhinsk has been the twin city of Bitterfeld.)

If you want to do it yourself, you can travel by regional train from Nizhni Novgorod, 42 km away.
