The Republic Mordovia (also Mordovia called) is in the Russian federation district Volga. It borders on the oblasts Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk and Pensa as well as to the republic Chuvashia.

The name of the republic is derived from the Mordwiner people who belong to the Finno-Ugric peoples belongs. There are two languages: that Ersjanische is spoken predominantly in the northern part of Mordovia, and that Mochan. Both dialects are also the official language.

The Russians now make up the majority of the population, so the official language is Russian.
