Urbisaglia (from 1936 to 1945 Urbisaglia Bonservizi) is an Italian town of 2,594 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, in Marche.
The name of the city derives from that of the ancient Roman city of Urbs Salvia.
Background
City of Regio V Picenum, Urbs Salvia was born as a colony in the 2nd century BC. Extensively rebuilt between the Augustan and Tiberian ages (early 1st century AD), based on a specific monumental project of the city, its decline began with the passage of Alaric's troops in 408-409 AD.
In the following centuries the inhabitants of Urbs Salvia, who gradually took refuge on the top of the hill, gave rise to the Castro de Orbesallia. In the 12th century near Urbisaglia an important religious, economic and cultural center arose, theChiaravalle di Fiastra Abbey, which exerted a strong influence on the whole of the Fiastra Valley and on the surrounding territories.
During the period of papal government the first excavations of the Roman city were carried out, while after the unification of Italy the conditions were created for a better standard of living for the population thanks to industrial development, which saw the birth of a spinning mill, a hosiery , a soap factory, etc.
With the bequests of the benefactors Angelo Buccolini, Innocenzo Petrini and the Marquis Alessandro Giannelli, the town equipped itself with a kindergarten, a hospital, a hospice for the elderly and a Monte di Pietà.
During the Fascist period the name "Bonservizi" was added to the toponym Urbisaglia, in memory of the Urbisalviense Nicola_Bonservizi, journalist of the Popolo d'Italia and founder of the Fasci di Parigi, assassinated in the French capital in 1924 by an anarchist. In the years of the Second World War, Urbisaglia was the site of an internment camp located in the Giustiniani Bandini Palace adjacent to the Chiaravalle di Fiastra Abbey. , energy and clothing.
