Viña del Mar is the most famous seaside resort Chile. The city with a permanent population of 300,000 is located in the metropolitan area of Valparaíso, but has now surpassed this city in terms of population. Despite the big city ambience, the city is also scenic because of the Mediterranean-like vegetation and the hills and bays in the area.

Viña del Mar is next to the beach tourism also an important festival city, especially because of the Festival de la Canción, one of the biggest music events in Latin America.

background

The name Viña del Mar comes from a hacienda that existed in the city as early as the 16th century and lived mainly from viticulture (viña means vineyard). In 1874 the city was founded on the drawing board. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the wealthy citizens of Santiago discovered beach tourism, the city quickly grew to become the largest seaside resort in Chile.

trips

Santiago de Chile

Unless you have already explored the capital in the first few days after arriving in Chile, a trip is worthwhile. Santiago is not only the geographical, but also the economic and political center of the country. The center with the palm trees Plaza de Armas offers architectural and cultural highlights, the financial district Sanhattan in the east of the city stands for modern Chile. The tallest building in Latin America, the Gran Torre Santiago, is also located here. The Cerros offer views of the capital from above Santa Lucía and San Cristòbalwhich, as extensive parks, also invite you to take long walks.

Valparaíso

The slightly smaller neighboring town Valparaíso, the capital of the V region and the seat of the Chilean parliament, has significantly more sights to offer than Viña del Mar. Stroll through the alleys with brightly painted houses on Cerros Alegre and Concepción, take a look at small artisan shops or in nice cafes Let your mind wander with a great view - all that is possible here. On the other hand, inanimate corners are a bit more dangerous than in Viña, but the risk is manageable.

Concón

Concón is located north of Viña del Mar and is especially interesting for all those who like to bathe in the cold Pacific or at least want to stroll along long beaches. The place is far enough from the major ports in Valparaíso and San Antonio away to offer clean beaches. Afterwards it is worth stopping at one of the numerous restaurants. Also worth seeing are the Dunas de Concón in the south of the village, which should be visited as long as they have not yet been replaced by high-rise apartment buildings. The ascent in the loose sand is more than made up for by the spectacular sunset in the Pacific.

Distance: 15 kilometers

Accessibility: numerous public buses go there on various routes
