The municipality, raised in 1956, is located at the confluence of the river Wasser (Romanian Vaser) into the Wischau (Vișeu), on the edge of the Eastern Carpathians at an altitude of 427 meters. It covers 443.06 km² and has a good 15,000 inhabitants.
Vișeu de Sus was first mentioned in a document in 1362. At the end of the 18th century, several waves of German settlers came from Austria and Slovakia, especially from the Spiš region, which is why they still call themselves "Zipser" and the German quarter is called "Zipserei". The basis of income was mostly mining and logging. In 1930 the largest ethnic group was still the Jews (34%), ahead of Romanians (33%) and Germans (25%). Today 85% are Romanians, the Germans only make up 4%; not a single citizen professes the Mosaic faith any more.
Districts
Oberwischau (rum.: Vișeu de Sus) and Mittelwischau (rum.: Vișeu de Mijloc).
Etymology (origin) of the place name
The name of the three sister communities Ober-, Mittel- and Niederwischau (Vișeu de Sus, de Mijloc and de Jos) was given by the River Wischau (Vișeu). First mentioned in 1468. The old name of the area of today's city center was Zwischenbach (rum.: Între Râuri).

crime towards strangers is possible in Vișeu de Sus, but rarely. Nevertheless, it is advisable to observe the usual safety rules as everywhere; Caution helps to avoid unpleasant or even dangerous situations:
Opportunity makes thieves! There is a lot of poverty in Romania; Valuables should therefore not obviously be left in the vehicle to avoid unpleasant surprises. If possible, expensive vehicles should not be taken to Romania without a built-in alarm device. However, if you stay in the countryside in small towns where the neighbors know each other, the risk of theft is much lower than in cities. In Vișeu de Sus there is the possibility to park your vehicle on the private property of the railway and in different, also paid, guarded parking lots. It is always advisable to use such guarded parking facilities.
