Vinchio (Vinch or Vens or Vèins in Piedmontese) is a town in theAsti.

To know

It is probable that the toponym derives from some documents of the eleventh century which attest the locality as Viginti, probably indicating "twenty" Roman miles, of an ancient articulated path that probably started from Alexandria or from Acqui Terme; however, according to others, the term may have merged with the Celtoligean root vi-nt, the latter with the meaning of height.

Geographical notes

The territory of the municipality is divided on a group of hills that are located between the Langhe and the Monferrato, at the convergence of three Roman roads (Ramaudio, Luparia and Fonsmagna). With Screening Serra is Engraved Scapaccino, is part of those municipalities close to the Special nature reserve of Val Sarmassa, famous for a valuable cultivation of vines, from which white and red grapes are obtained.

Among the typical wines produced in the area, Barbera stands out, grown mainly in the hamlet areas San Pancrazio and, in particular, Bric Three Bishops, where the wine takes its name from the hamlet of the same name at 255 meters above sea level, since historically the intersection of the territories of the Diocese of Alexandria, of the Diocese of Acqui and the Diocese of Asti. Even the historic center itself, which in the Middle Ages was dominated by the castle of the Marquis Scarampi del Carretto, is surrounded by hills planted with vineyards. The inhabited area develops along a ridge on the right bank of the Tiglione stream.

Background

Of ancient Celtic and then Roman settlement, the entire territory was liberated by the Saracens from Aleramo del Monferrato, Count of Acqui, and it is likely that a small village has begun to populate thanks to the migrations of some inhabitants of the nearby and pre-existing Castelnuovo Calcea, starting from the XII century.

Owned by the Marquis of Savona Bonifacio del Vasto, the medieval village then passed under the bishop's power, disputed between the Chapter of Acqui and Alexandria, to end up under the Lordships of Asti starting from the fourteenth century.

It then passed to the Solaro nobles of Asti, then to Count Antonio Scarampi, and later, for many years, to the Visconti of Pavia, until at least the Empire of Charles V of Habsburg. It was during this period, in the 16th century, that the Church of the Brotherhood of the Holy Trinity, better known as Church of the Battuti, even if the bell tower is from the nineteenth century. From 1735 the fiefdom passed to the Savoy, who annexed it to the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 18th century the parish church of Santi Marco and Vincenzo was enlarged.

In the twentieth century Vinchio also distinguished itself as a place of refuge for displaced persons and anti-fascists of the Second World War, a place of round-ups and summary executions in June and July 1944, so much so as to establish a House of Memory of the Resistance and Deportation of VinchioIn more recent years, the town has redeveloped the village and its tourist and food and wine offers.
