Info

The toponym "Flemish Brabant" consists of two parts of the name, namely Flemish and Brabant. Flemish refers to the fact that it concerns the Flemish part of the former province of Brabant. This was split on January 1, 1995. The name Brabant is a derivative of Braecbant. This is a combination of braec, which means pants or swampy land, and bant which means region.

The province was created when the old province of Brabant was split along the language border into a Flemish part (Flemish Brabant), a Walloon part (Walloon Brabant) and the Brussels-Capital Region, which was removed from the division into provinces. This separation took place on January 1, 1995. The province of Flemish Brabant belongs to the Flemish Region, the province of Walloon Brabant to the Walloon Region. The Brussels-Capital Region is completely enclosed by Flemish Brabant territory.

Language

The only official language is Dutch. However, in some municipalities with facilities around Brussels and along the language border, French speakers enjoy language facilities. In recent decades, not small numbers of immigrants and foreigners have settled here. The group of immigrants can be divided into four major groups sociologically and demographically: Dutch speakers who come to live closer to their work in Brussels or who leave exactly from Brussels, French speakers, also from Brussels and also from Wallonia, North American and EU citizens, for international companies and European institutions and often only living here for a few years, and North African and Turkish immigrants, who often also lived in Brussels first.

The dialect is Brabantish. This is mainly still used as colloquial language by the older generation. In a large part of the province, South Brabant dialects are spoken, such as Leuven, in which the egg, ij and onion when very wide diphthongs are realized. In the east of the province (Tienen and surroundings) you can hear Getelands, or Brabants with Limburg influences.

Arrive

Flemish Brabant is very easily accessible both by car and by public transport. The road network is very dense and the same can be said about the train connections throughout the province. The motorways run from east to west (E40), north to south (E19 and A12) and northeast to southwest (E314) through the province, the E429 and E411 also run over a limited distance through Flemish Brabant. Around Brussels is the Brussels ring or R0 that connects the motorways and which largely runs on the territory of Flemish Brabant.
