background

Wasserburg has about 3500 inhabitants and lives mainly from agriculture, tourism and fishing. The place is made up of several districts: Hege, Hattnau, Hengnau, Reutenen, Selmnau.

  • Agriculture - The region around Wasserburg lives mainly from fruit growing. Wine growing is becoming more and more important. There are also a large number of popular "wheel taverns". Here your own wine or cider is offered with hearty snacks. The products can be tasted and bought directly in various farm shops. The first-class schnapps are very popular. You can also watch the schnapps being distilled!
  • fishing - Fishing is very important. Around 10 professional fishermen still live in Wasserburg today. On request, you can accompany the fishermen on their morning catch. All fishermen have a private sale. You can buy freshly smoked whitefish or salmon trout directly from the producer.
  • industrial area -In the north of Wasserburg (above the B31-old) is the industrial area. Some craft businesses and the recycling center are located here. There is also a tennis hall here, which is open all year round.

Tourist Attractions

  • peninsula - The peninsula is the figurehead of the "pearl on Lake Constance", as Wasserburg is often called. On it is the church of St. George with the rectory, the so-called Malhaus and the Wasserburg Castle. There is also a restaurant and library in the guest house. The peninsula is a popular photo motif and is also often depicted by artists, especially from the west side, the so-called "painter's angle".
  • Parish Church of St George - The church is located in the middle of the walled churchyard - part of the former island fortifications, which are still clearly visible from the seaside. In the interior, in addition to the baroque high altar, the ceiling frescoes are particularly striking. They were created in 1920 by Prof. Otto Kämmerle and are very striking in the cold colors of the water and in an expressionist style of painting. In the cemetery around the parish church is the grave of the Wasserburg honorary citizen and writer Dr. Horst Wolfram Geissler. He was the creator of the fictional character "Dear Augustine".
  • Museum in the painting house - The Malhaus was once built as a courthouse for the Fuggers. It's on the peninsula next to the church. Today the museum is housed in it. Permanent exhibitions concern fishing on Lake Constance as well as the life of Martin Walser, a native of Wasserburg. There are also constantly changing exhibitions on various locally-related topics.
  • Wasserburg Castle - The Wasserburg Castle was built in the 13th / 14th Built in the 17th century by the people of Montfort. A massive building, located directly on the lake. Today the facility is used as a hotel and restaurant. The wonderfully situated terrace is particularly popular for enjoying the sunset on the lake. There is also an original castle cellar that is used for private celebrations or special occasions.
  • Anthony's Chapel - The Antonius Chapel is located on a hill in the Selmnau district. It houses a statue of the Mother of God, which is admired by many people, and a richly decorated baroque high altar. The chapel can be easily reached on foot from the town center (about 30 minutes). From there you have a wonderful view of Wasserburg and the lake.
  • St. James Chapel - This tiny chapel dates back to the Thirty Years' War and is located in the Reutenen district. It was lovingly restored by private individuals in 2004 and is really worth seeing today!

activities

Due to the location on the lake, of course, the main season results in summer. The "Aquamarin" outdoor pool and some free access to the lake allow you to swim in Lake Constance. The tennis court (reservation at the tourist office) and a large children's playground are also located directly on the lake.

At the landing stage on the peninsula is a boat rental which also offers sailing courses.

During the season, promenade concerts take place on the peninsula on Sundays and there is an evening market on Lindenplatz in the center of the village every first Friday of the month.

  • Boat tours From Wasserburg you can take various short or day tours with the ships of the Lake Constance shipping company. Popular destinations are Rorschach - right on the opposite bank - as well Bregenz, Constancy and the "flower island" Mainau. Bicycles can also be taken on all ships (but not cheap !!) A very special experience is an excursion on the "Hohentwiel", a lovingly restored historic steamer. Excursions as well as dance or gourmet trips are offered here.
  • Nordic Walking Park - There are over 100 km of signposted Nordic walking laps in the picturesque surrounding area. The corresponding route guide is available from the tourist information in the town hall.
  • To go biking - The area around Wasserburg is ideal for recreational cyclists, if only because of the mostly flat terrain. Wasserburg is located directly on the Lake Constance circular route which is very well signposted. You can also combine individual stages with a boat trip. There is a bike rental shop on Halbinselstraße and at the train station.
  • Children's weeks - The "Wie-Was-Wasserburg Children's Weeks" take place every year from June to September. In a varied program, children have the opportunity to test or practice a wide variety of activities. Be it sports such as tennis, cycling, soccer, inline skating, swimming, sailing ... or interesting sightseeing (fire brigade, bakery) everything is enthusiastically accepted. From excursions to the biotope to handicraft courses and family services - a really rich offer for children during the holiday season!
